Website Security: 2025 Vulnerabilities and How to Keep Data Safe

Content

Clients who come to MONA asking about website security usually only care about changing passwords to something hard to guess, but in practice that blocks very few risks. According to Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2025 report, more than 500,000 websites were infected with malware in 2024, and 96% of vulnerabilities were in third-party plugins rather than the core system. In fact, 43% of vulnerabilities could be exploited without logging in, meaning attackers climb in through the window and do not even bother with the front door key. Changing your password does nothing.

In this article, we break down the most common vulnerabilities today and share, in full, the 10 safe deployment rules we drew from the incident when MONA had a coin-mining script planted in 06/2026. Our advice is not to trust any tool that promises total safety after one click; the most urgent thing right now is to review and delete pirated plugins immediately.

What is website security, and why do business owners so often neglect it

the mona bear looking alarmed at a bright red error warning screen
Complacency about security is usually paid for with customer data.

You open your screen at eight on Monday morning and, instead of a new order notification, you find your homepage has turned into a pitch-black screen in a foreign language. We have noticed that clients who come to MONA for e-commerce websites often skip this step, because everyone thinks buying an SSL certificate or clicking to download a free tool is enough. That is the trap.

Patchstack's 2024 report states plainly that 96% of WordPress vulnerabilities sit in third-party plugins, and 43% of those let hackers dig deep into the platform without a password. When we take on emergency website rescues, we clearly see shop owners going online to download security plugin installs in cracked versions to save money. You are convinced the system has a shield. In reality you have thrown the door wide open and invited malware into the house.

Website security is the work of reviewing source code every single day to close the careless gaps. Busy running a business and seeing the interface run smoothly, you tend to ignore the hidden warnings in the configuration, taking it easy until your sales site lands on a blacklist along with more than 500,000 other malware-infected websites.

Never hand the life of your customer data to automatic buttons; you need a team in place for website maintenance that scans connection ports every night and backs up the source code continuously, so if the site goes down a backup can be brought up immediately.

WordPress website security: where do 96% of vulnerabilities come from?

the mona bear team inspecting source code for plugin vulnerabilities
Ninety-six percent of the risk lies in the plugins added to the system.

One morning you open your website and the interface is full of foreign text or automatically redirects to a strange site. The cause is usually files hidden deep in the source code, not leaked login details. When we take on system clean-ups, we see most owners lose control completely because they do not know where the root error is. Most of it comes from carelessly installing pirated plugins.

The State of WordPress Security in 2025 report by Patchstack gives very clear figures. In 2024 more than 500,000 websites were infected with malware, and around 22 new vulnerabilities were discovered every day. The scariest part is that 96% of vulnerabilities sit in add-on plugins, and 43% of those can be exploited directly without logging in.

Changing to a strong password is not enough. Using cracked tools floating around the internet is inviting the risk in yourself. Even if you set up a tool MONA Shield to block unnecessary scanning entry points such as XML-RPC or the REST API, that step can never replace cleaning the pirated code out from the inside.

When the system breaks, restoring the latest backup is always far faster and more thorough than trying to delete malicious code line by line yourself. Clients using our website maintenance service always get genuine tools and a technician who handles the issue directly.

Do not use pirated plugins. Every shield is pointless if you still begrudge a little money for a license and carry malware into your own house.

Is an AI-written app safe when you are about to open it to customers?

MONA bear closing connection ports on a server
Source code generated by AI often leaves several back doors open without the user knowing.

Once the app launches successfully on their computer, many business owners rush to put that exact code on a server to take customer payments. Machine-written code often leaves every port wide open and the admin password blank so you can test features easily. Running a business on that bare code is handing your customer data to criminals yourself. MONA Shield: a lifetime license per domain, issued once, no annual fee (priced per website quote) (we checked on 19/09/2026).

We learned this the hard way ourselves in 06/2026, when a draft app running in dev mode with a public port and root access turned a virtual server into a crypto-mining tool for attackers. After that incident, our engineering team locked in 10 rules for production: run apps as non-root, bind to 127.0.0.1 behind nginx, set ufw to deny by default, allow SSH key-only access, and never commit secrets. This standard is now built into every project MONA hands over.

On top of that, AI very often leaves API keys sitting in raw, unencrypted files. The process of securing AI-written code requires a seasoned engineer to review every configuration line and seal off exposed network ports before launch day. This is a job for specialists. If your company has no developer watching the system every day, simply hand it over to website maintenance services for professional services.

Machine-generated code is only for closed testing. Never put a draft build on a live business system.

Checking your own website security: the traps that are easy to fall into

confused MONA bear in front of an insecure admin dashboard
Changing passwords is not enough if the website's hidden communication ports are still wide open.

After installing three or four anti-spam tools and ticking every setting from an online tutorial, you close the laptop feeling the place is locked up tight. This is the trap we see clients fall into most when they try to save a few million on hiring someone and do it themselves with patchy knowledge. The front door ends up locked, but the REST API and XML-RPC windows stay wide open, letting malware slip through the gap, sweep up customer data and bring down the whole business server, with a clean-up bill ten times higher.

When we take on system clean-ups for clients, we find the core code is actually rarely the hole. According to Patchstack's whitepaper from early 2025, the WordPress ecosystem logged 22 new vulnerabilities a day, with 96% in random plugins, only 7 from the core, and 43% exploitable without logging in. You gather free tools to fend off attacks but end up bringing a nest of fire ants into the house, joining the more than 500,000 websites infected with malware in 2024 just because of a careless install.

Cleaning up actually does not cost much if you contain the problem early. When we take on a project, we immediately close the unnecessary scanning doors with MONA Shield. This lightweight protection layer is written by us and comes with a lifetime license and no annual fee; it hides the version number and locks the REST API window to block drive-by scanning bots. If you need someone watching for errors every day, the Gấu Webmaster team will take over the whole backup and one-click restore process when something goes wrong, for 2,000,000 VND per month. Doing it yourself is only cheap at first. Do not experiment on real data.

Open your plugin list and check whether any are pirated copies. A crypto-mining script hidden inside one can easily eat up your bandwidth and cost tens of millions to fix, just like the crashed site we had to rescue in 06/2026. Review it carefully. If your site is unusually slow, tell us and we will turn on MONA Shield to scan it.

10 safe deployment rules we learned the hard way

doi gau mona dong dau moc len bang quy tac deploy
We distilled these rules from real incidents on our own servers.

At two in the morning the server goes down hard because a new staff member pushed a command to the wrong environment, customers keep calling about payment errors while you stay up all night calling technicians to save the situation, and everything is out of control. A customer who waits three minutes for a reply is already lost. Here the whole system is dead for hours.

After more than 14,000 projects, we know that code running smoothly on a personal computer may not survive in the real world. According to the IBM Cost of a Data Breach 2024 report, the average cost of a data breach hit 4.88 million USD, often caused by tiny configuration mistakes during deployment. So that you are never left stranded, software development model of ours must strictly follow the 10 vital rules below.

  • 1. Never edit code directly on the server: Every change, big or small, starts on a local machine; patching bugs directly on the live server is suicide.
  • 2. Two rounds of testing: We test internally first, then deploy to a staging environment identical to production for you to sign off before going live.
  • 3. Lock down access: Only the person with the highest authority may press the final update button.
  • 4. Automated scanning before merging code: Buying securing AI-written code now has to be tightened with an independent scanning system to catch errors at the very start.
  • 5. Packaged environments: We make sure the new server is configured exactly like the test setup, eliminating mistakes from manual work.
  • 6. Isolated automatic backups: All business data is copied to a separate safe location exactly ten minutes before the system update.
  • 7. Ready to roll back: If a release hits an error, the system has a button to roll back to the previous version immediately so customers do not have to wait.
  • 8. Spread the risk: We never let an entire service depend on a single server; if one node goes down, another takes over automatically.
  • 9. Action logs: Who did what, at what time, and exactly which line was changed are all recorded in detail.
  • 10. Heartbeat alarms: Pushing code does not mean the job is done. The system automatically messages a technician as soon as CPU usage jumps above 80%, and we fix it before you even notice the app slowing down.

Picture it this way: following each of these slow steps properly is what lets the system hold up under load when traffic peaks. Skip a few steps to go faster, website maintenance services and later it will surely turn into endless rounds of tearing down and rebuilding that cost hundreds of millions. You can experiment with anything. Not with the life of your business.

MONA Shield and the armour layer that blocks basic malware scanning

MONA bear holding an energy shield protecting a website
The first security layer helps the website stop automated scanning by hackers.

Looking at the yearly renewal invoice for security tools, many business owners shrug and download a cracked version to save money. They install it and breathe a sigh of relief.

In reality, 96% of WordPress vulnerabilities come from those very cracked add-ons, which quietly spread malware across the system while you are happy about saving a few million on licenses. Today, 43% of vulnerabilities can be exploited directly without even going through login, so no matter how complex your password is, it is useless once the back door is wide open.

We tasted this ourselves when a VPS was hijacked for crypto mining in 06/2026; the attacker got in easily just because a test app accidentally opened a public port with root privileges. After that, we tightened things with 10 strict deployment rules, forcing every app to run without root, sit behind an internal firewall that denies by default, and connect only with encrypted keys. These rules now apply to 100% of the apps we deploy for clients.

Bringing that principle of closing unused ports to the WordPress platform, we developed our own armor layer MONA Shield to quietly cut off XML-RPC and REST API connections and also hide the version information. Clients receive a lifetime license per domain exactly once, permanently striking off the renewal fee that eats money every year.

This armor layer is built for business websites that are selling steadily, locking the outer doors to directly protect revenue worth billions. Installing security does not mean you can sleep soundly. You still have to clean out the pirated seeds already rooted inside. The definitive fix is to work with website maintenance services so a technician can review and remove the malware at its root and replace everything with genuine software.

Website security methods that also apply to retail systems

MONA bear setting up a secure network for a spa chain
Every software system connected to the internet needs regular vulnerability reviews.

Clients who come to us for software often think a closed internal app is safer than a public sales website, but in practice both are defended the same way. Say a retail system shares one management software; a single infected computer at a counter is enough to expose all the data, with huge consequences.

The biggest trap we see when fixing issues for clients is the habit of using pirated extensions. Patchstack's 2025 report shows 96% of WordPress vulnerabilities sit in third-party plugins, causing more than 500,000 websites to be infected with malware in 2024. Worse, 43% of vulnerabilities let attackers in without logging in, so however hard your password is, it means nothing when the back door is wide open; one small slip and you lose everything.

If you run a WordPress site that is selling with third-party plugins installed, you must set up a dedicated anti-scanning layer plus someone on duty ready to restore the moment something goes wrong. We always bundle this standard into website maintenance services for our clients, combined with MONA Shield to fully close unused ports such as XML-RPC and the REST API. Cleaning malware by hand takes all day. A one-click restore and it is done.

Installing one extension is not enough. In 06/2026 we handled a VPS that had a crypto miner planted on it, caused by an app running in dev mode that opened a public port with root access. Since then we have tightened ten deployment rules applied to every client app and to MONA Cloud itself, denying by default with ufw and running apps as non-root hidden behind nginx, which stops the risk cold.

What to do when your website is hacked, and frequently asked questions

MONA bear as a call center agent guiding a customer
Restoring data from the latest backup is always the top priority when something goes wrong.

Customers call to complain because the homepage has turned into a betting site, while your own staff are still fumbling for the admin password. That feeling of watching your website being taken over right in front of you sends a chill down the spine of anyone running a large site, and changing the password does nothing. MONA Shield: a lifetime license per domain, issued once, no annual fee (priced per website quote) (we checked on 19/09/2026).

Patchstack research from 2025 shows about 22 new WordPress vulnerabilities are published every day, and 43 percent of them let hackers exploit them without logging in. However hard to guess your password is, it is useless if the site still leaves the door open, because 96 percent of vulnerabilities sit in plugins. We have taken on websites running pirated plugins, free downloads from the internet used to save a little money, and the result was inviting malware in. When a website is hacked, restoring from a daily backup is always cleaner than removing malicious code line by line by hand, so our Gấu Webmaster team always pulls the latest working version straight back over it.

Many business owners struggle to hunt down security holes themselves, but closing scanning ports with MONA Shield only blocks the outside; the root cause still requires cleaning out pirated plugins. A lot of people use AI to write their own software and then rush to open it to customers, carrying along the chronic illness of API keys exposed right in the source code or admin ports opened automatically with no password set. In 06/2026, one of our own servers had a crypto miner planted on it simply because it ran dev-mode code with a public port under root. After that, every piece of software we put on a server has to pass ten strict configuration rules in line with the standard of securing AI-written code.

Our advice is very direct. Never teach yourself server configuration or patching if you are not technical; buy genuine plugin licenses and hand system monitoring to specialists so you are free to focus on selling.

Gấu webmaster and our on-call recovery service

doi gau mona truc he thong giam sat website
We always have someone on duty, ready to handle any outage or server failure.

On a Saturday morning you open your laptop and the first message you see is a customer complaining that clicking your site bounces them to a betting page. We take on a lot of emergency cases like this, and it hurts to watch business owners make staff hunt down and delete malicious code line by line, because once it is deleted it comes back the next night through the same unpatched pirated plugin. What we actually do for clients is click restore to the clean backup from the day before so the site is back up serving customers, then quietly isolate and patch the hole in a separate environment; Gấu Webmaster does that every day.

To WordPress website security: the tools installed only send alerts, while a real person has to type the commands to patch plugins, close each unused port and personally watch the nightly backups. We charge exactly 2,000,000 VND/month for the Gấu Webmaster Basic plan to do all of this hands-on work, and advanced data protection adds 2,000,000 VND/month. Every item we commit to is laid out plainly in the Gấu Webmaster service scope; if the site goes down, MONA staff jump in and restore the system within minutes. No customers lost.

Systems that are already clean inside only need to buy the license for MONA Shield outright, issued for life per domain, paid once; we do not charge yearly. It is a steel shield that stops automated scanners from prying the door open from outside, but it is completely useless if you insist on holding on to cracked plugins carrying malware inside. However good the shield, if the person guarding the warehouse lets the thief in, you still lose everything.

Many people mistakenly think buying security software settles it, and happily leave the site to run on its own forever. If you are looking for that kind of magic charm, do not sign up for our service.

A manifesto for growing together

MONA is a software, digital transformation and AI transformation company, but above all, MONA is a B2B service company that benefits directly from this: THE MORE SUCCESSFUL VIETNAMESE BUSINESSES BECOME, THE MORE MONA BENEFITS, while a declining, slow market with weak technology is exactly what kills MONA's future business opportunities. So, more than anyone, MONA wants you to succeed, and MONA actually steps in to help you succeed.

And AI transformation is the key to that success for all of us.

MONA

Review website vulnerabilities before you lose data

The cost of cleaning malware and repairing your reputation is dozens of times higher than the fee you meant to save at first, all because you downloaded one pirated plugin. We understand many of you search online for ways to block XML-RPC, or struggle to apply each core patch to protect your customer list. Most business owners we meet have tried installing a few free tools at random, or handed the whole thing to an AI tool to write firewall code. That approach leaks easily. AI-written apps often expose deadly keys, especially when no seasoned engineer reviews them. We handle this with MONA Shield on a lifetime license, combined with the Gấu Webmaster on-duty team to test every flow thoroughly before launch and restore data immediately if the site goes down. Call us on 1900 636 648. We will start scanning your entire source code. MONA Shield: a lifetime license per domain, issued once, no annual fee (priced per website quote) (we checked on 19/09/2026).
