What Is Coolify? Installing a Self-Hosted PaaS

Lately we often meet coders who want a Vercel-like tool to run on their own VPS. These "vibe coders" don't want to depend on the bandwidth limits of big platforms. You want to control every step of the server setup without paying too much each month.

What is Coolify? Coolify is an open-source self-hosted PaaS (Platform as a Service). This tool lets you manage your whole server system, databases and web apps yourself. You can install it on any virtual private server (VPS) to deploy code automatically and simply. It works much like the well-known cloud services on the market.

What is Coolify and how does a self-hosted PaaS work

Self-hosted PaaS means a platform service that you host yourself on your own infrastructure. Instead of paying a third party to manage cloud infrastructure, you rent a clean VPS. Then you install the whole management system on that server yourself. The software acts as a web dashboard connected directly to your server's operating system. The dashboard shows RAM and CPU stats and manages your project's environment variables directly. At MONA we see this as a natural step for many experienced developers. It is especially useful when your system starts to grow and third-party hosting costs shoot up. At MONA we see many vibe coders wanting their own Vercel on a VPS, and Coolify is the name they have asked about most since early 2026.

This platform uses what is docker behind the scenes to package and run apps. Each time you push new code to your GitHub repository, the system automatically catches the webhook signal. It pulls the updated source code straight to your server. Next, the system builds images and runs new containers to replace the old ones. This whole process runs automatically behind the scenes. You never have to type command-line steps by hand each time you want to release an app update.

The interface of this management platform is very intuitive. Actions like adding a domain or creating a database are built to be easy for users. You can watch real-time logs of each application service right in your web browser. It also automatically issues HTTPS security certificates for every domain you add to the system. You only need to point the domain to your VPS's IP address, and all the routing configuration runs on its own. This automation saves you a lot of time setting up your network infrastructure.

Coolify vs Vercel compared on cost and operations

Many engineers move to a self-managed platform because they want to leave Vercel once the monthly bill starts climbing. Vercel mainly charges based on bandwidth usage and the running minutes of serverless functions. If your website suddenly gets a big spike in traffic, the bill at the end of the month can skyrocket. You can easily lose control of the infrastructure budget for the whole project.

We often advise you to think carefully about managing the system yourself versus using a ready-made service. When you decide to install everything on your own VPS, you only pay a fixed monthly fee for the server resources. You can run as many web apps and side projects on it as you like. The only limit is when the VPS runs out of RAM and CPU power.

Criterion Vercel Coolify
Cost Billed by bandwidth and the number of serverless function runs Fixed cost based on the specs of the rented VPS
Level of control Fully dependent on the rules of a third-party platform You own 100% of your project data and network infrastructure
Convenience Extremely convenient for beginners because everything is preconfigured You need to spend time on the initial setup and regular maintenance
Scalability The platform scales automatically and quickly when traffic spikes You have to upgrade the VPS plan yourself when the server is overloaded

With the Vercel ecosystem, you never have to worry about the server going down from overloaded or failing hardware. Every piece of machinery is managed behind the scenes on their huge cloud infrastructure. When you go the self-managed route, you are responsible for all security issues yourself. You also have to log in and restart the service yourself if the server stops suddenly. Even so, the complete freedom to customize the runtime environment is a great advantage of a self-hosted platform. It suits projects that need special libraries or software installed.

How much RAM does a VPS need to run a management platform?

Choosing the right VPS configuration from the start is an extremely important preparation step. For this self-managed platform to stay stable in the long run, you can't use servers with very limited resources. The dashboard software itself needs a fixed amount of RAM and CPU to keep its background monitoring services running. We advise against trying Coolify on a 1 GB RAM machine, because Docker builds easily run out of memory halfway and freeze the whole machine.

We find the minimum spec for a smooth installation is 2 GB RAM and 2 physical CPU cores. If you plan to run several heavy projects or use a database with a huge number of records, 4 GB RAM gives you much more peace of mind. The server's disk should be at least 30 GB. Docker image files for your projects often take up a lot of space with each version update. You also need to leave extra room for the system to create automatic weekly data backups.

You can check the service price list cheap VPS for more details on the hardware configurations. A setup with 2 cores, 2 GB RAM and 30 GB disk costs only about 1.250đ/hour. Renting a virtual server by the hour lets you freely turn the platform on and off for testing. You don't have to worry about a large upfront cost in the first days of learning the software. Only when your project's real user base grows do you need to plan a hardware upgrade.

How to install Coolify on a basic VPS for your project

Setting up this platform on a VPS has now been fully simplified by its developers for programmers. You only need a completely blank server running a stable version of Ubuntu or Debian. This server must never have had any web server software such as Nginx or Apache installed before. Using a server free of leftover software helps avoid TCP port conflicts at startup. We usually install it on an hourly-billed machine, test for half a day, then shut it down so we don't spend money while we're still learning.

We always remind you of one vital rule: log in to the server directly with a root account before typing commands. First, copy the single automatic install command from the project's official homepage. Then paste that bash command into the terminal window connected to the server over SSH. The script runs on its own to download the core source files the system needs. It also sets up the Docker engine and Docker Compose on your virtual machine. This automatic process usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. How fast it goes depends entirely on the network speed of the virtual server.

After the full installation is done, the terminal prints a server IP address along with the web access port number. Copy that whole link and paste it straight into the address bar of a regular web browser. The system walks you step by step through creating the first administrator account to secure the connection. Next, you grant the platform access to link with your personal GitHub repository. This link gives the system direct access to pull the whole project source code onto the hosting machine. Finally, you just set the environment variables for the app and press the button to start deploying the service.

Coolify vs Dokploy compared when choosing a setup

When looking for a self-hosted PaaS platform, you may come across a few new names on online forums. Dokploy is another tool with similar server management features that has drawn a lot of attention lately. Both of these open source tools share the same vision of delivering a top-notch convenient experience. They make deploying code on a self-hosted VPS feel as easy as using what is vercel for hobbyist developers. We see these two tools often compared: Dokploy is leaner, Coolify has more features.

At MONA, we often advise you to put system stability and a large support community first when picking a tool. The original platform has gone through a much longer development cycle than its rival Dokploy. It keeps a large base of real users across the world's sharing platforms. Its documentation is also far more detailed, rich and easy to follow. Everyday minor bugs already have countless discussion threads with thorough fixes. Dokploy, meanwhile, scores with its standout advantage of being very lightweight and offering a very clean control panel. That interface design really suits people who only run a few small static projects.

Both tools more than meet the need to deploy applications with Docker virtualization. If you only run a few static landing pages or simple APIs, Dokploy is a lightweight option worth a look. But if your project needs a powerful ecosystem that supports many kinds of complex databases, the older platform clearly has the edge in feature richness. Which tool you pick depends a lot on how far you expect to scale your architecture in the future.

A deployment solution with MONA Cloud instead of a tedious installation

Even though setting up a self-hosted PaaS platform on your own gives you a horizon of freedom, you still face a painful problem. You have to give up time to carry out regular system software maintenance yourself. You have to take responsibility for fixing things when a domain's SSL certificate suddenly refuses to renew automatically. Or, as simply as when the VPS disk fills up with access log files generated every day, you have to dig in and delete them yourself. These repetitive manual chores always eat into your time and wear out busy engineers.

We think there is a stronger solution that saves you the headache: use the app host feature directly on MONA Cloud. You don't need to install any intermediary management tool on your server at all. The MONA Cloud system lets you deploy web apps straight from your source code repository. The service also automatically issues a Let’s Encrypt HTTPS certificate in only about 150 seconds of initial setup. Our powerful server infrastructure spans 5 data center regions, from Vietnam all the way to the US. This distribution gives your website fast page loads for customers living in many different countries.

That's not all: the platform also lets you create server configurations using a Vietnamese dong (VND) wallet. Any business customer can request a value-added tax (VAT) invoice every month, transparently. If you work with AI coding tools, the platform also comes with built-in deep MCP integration. You can simply tell vibecloud vps cho ai agent to create a virtual machine automatically through Claude Code or Codex with ease. Every newly opened account receives 100.000đ in credit in its wallet after a successful sign-up on the portal MONA Cloud. This approach gives your project the control of a private server while removing the burden of running the infrastructure yourself.

FAQ

What is a self-hosted PaaS?

This term refers to a system that provides all the server management services and app deployment workflow, set up by the user personally. It runs directly on a VPS server that you rent and pay for monthly. The concept is the opposite of commercial cloud services in that users keep ownership of their own data. You never get an extra variable-fee invoice from the provider whenever web traffic suddenly spikes.

What are the differences between Coolify and Vercel?

Vercel is positioned as a cloud hosting service that offers an all-in-one feature set optimized for web developers. Their team of technical experts handles everything from setting up the hardware infrastructure to applying security patches. A self-managed platform, in contrast, always requires users to prepare their own server connected to the internet. You take on running the management software on that machine in exchange for maximum freedom in configuring the environment.

What should you watch out for when installing Coolify on a VPS?

Anyone should always start the setup with a brand-new, completely clean VPS. The server must run a Linux operating system recommended by the developer, such as a current Ubuntu version. Before running the core install commands, it is important to check the firewall settings carefully and open the right network ports. You also need to schedule regular backups of important configuration data to a location outside that virtual server.

Can Dokploy replace this platform?

The open source software Dokploy is built with the main goal of being light to run in real use. It has an extremely intuitive web interface, very suitable for the simple static app deployments of students. Even so, the project is still young and hasn't yet built a community strong enough to share fixes for hard problems. You should take some time to evaluate and analyze the long-term development goals of your personal project carefully.
