Which WordPress Translation Plugin Is Worth Using? Compared

A WordPress translation plugin is a tool that lets a WordPress website run in several languages: it translates posts, pages, menus and interface strings, and declares hreflang for search engines. According to W3Techs, most web content worldwide is not in Vietnamese, so a website that wants to welcome customers from abroad almost has to have this layer.

In this article we compare the popular options head to head: WPML, Polylang, TranslatePress and MONA Multilingual. We also cover something few articles mention but that matters a lot this year: plugin licensing.

When does a website need a translation plugin

The clearest sign is that you start answering overseas customers by message while your website only has Vietnamese. Many businesses handle this by building a separate English website, and a few months later realize they are feeding two websites with two content sources that have drifted apart.

A translation plugin solves exactly that: one WordPress system, one data source, and several language versions managed in one place. If the basics are not solid yet, read What is WordPress, and for a deeper look at the multilingual problem there is the article What is WPML that we have just analyzed in detail.

Four criteria for choosing a translation plugin, and one that often gets forgotten

CriterionQuestion to answer
Translation scopeDoes it translate only posts, or also menus, buttons and interface strings
Technical standardsDoes it generate hreflang and separate URLs for each language automatically
Real usersCan your content staff work with it themselves, or do they need technical help
Cost and licensingHow much is the yearly renewal, and is the plugin source legitimate

Every article mentions the first three criteria. The fourth is where we see many Vietnamese websites stumble: they pick a powerful plugin, use a copy of unclear origin, and face the consequences described at the end of this article.

WPML: powerful and popular, paid yearly

WPML homepage, a popular paid WordPress translation plugin
WPML is a widely used paid translation plugin for multilingual WordPress websites.

WPML is almost the default name for multilingual WordPress websites: it translates down to interface strings, manages translations with a workflow, and works with a wide ecosystem. In return, WPML is paid yearly and priced by the number of sites, and the more features a site uses, the more resources the plugin consumes. The whole admin interface and support channel are in English, so Vietnamese content teams usually need some training before they use it comfortably.

Polylang: free to start, suits small websites

Polylang has a free version on the official WordPress.org directory, suited to websites with few pages.

Polylang has a free version on the official directory; it is light and enough for a blog or a small brochure website. The limit is that the free version does not translate interface strings in depth, more features require the paid Pro version, and translation is still done by hand, page by page. A website with several hundred pages or more using Polylang will struggle in day-to-day operation.

TranslatePress: visual translation right on the front end

TranslatePress homepage, a visual translation plugin for WordPress
TranslatePress lets you edit translations directly on the live website view.

TranslatePress has a pleasant approach: you look at the website the way a visitor does and edit the translation on the spot. It suits non-technical people well. The downside is that business features like advanced hreflang and user language detection are in the paid yearly version, and machine translation has to connect to an outside service account, billed by the number of words.

MONA Multilingual: built for Vietnamese teams, free for MONA clients

MONA Multilingual: translates posts, interface strings and menus with AI, with a Vietnamese admin interface.

MONA Multilingual is a plugin developed by the MONA team after years of building multilingual websites for clients and seeing the same scene again and again: foreign plugins are very powerful, but Vietnamese operations teams cannot use them fully, and the English interface gets in the way at every step.

The plugin translates posts, interface strings and menus with AI inside the admin area, outputs proper hreflang, and has a fully Vietnamese interface. A website already running WPML does not need to be torn down: the plugin detects it and steps aside, switching over part by part. A live demo is available at plugin.mona.software so you can check it yourself, with screenshots taken from a real wp-admin.

The most valuable point is the one that costs nothing: clients who have their website built at MONA receive a Pro license for the whole set of 7 MONA plugins, including Multilingual, completely free per domain. The yearly renewal fee you are paying for a foreign translation plugin drops to zero.

Plugin licensing: buy it properly, use a cracked copy, or take another route

This is the part we ask you to read slowly. Strong translation plugins are paid yearly, so the Vietnamese market has many cracked copies sold cheaply or shared for free. A cracked copy has two hidden costs: first, it is pirated software at a time when Vietnam is tightening enforcement of software copyright; second, cracked copies are one of the most common ways malware gets into a website, from injecting spam ads to taking over admin access. We have cleaned up quite a few websites hit this way, and the cleanup usually costs many times the price of the plugin.

So there are really only two clean paths: pay the renewal fee for a foreign plugin regularly, or use a properly licensed plugin from the original developer. For websites built at MONA, the second path is already in the package: a full set of genuine plugins, copyright-clean, with someone responsible for maintenance. If your website was built elsewhere and you are worried about this, call 1900 636 648 and we will check your installed plugin list for risky copies.

Read the table by situation, not by columns of winners and losers: for a small personal blog, free Polylang makes sense; for a team used to visual editing, TranslatePress is pleasant; for a large system already running WPML stably, keep it. For a new Vietnamese business website, or one that wants to escape yearly renewal fees, Multilingual is the shortest path, especially if you were planning to build your website at MONA anyway.

Frequently asked questions about WordPress translation plugins

Is machine translation good enough for an online store

Good enough for a draft, not for publishing. The right way is for AI to translate first and a person to review the text customers see most: the homepage, main product pages and buttons. This two-step process is many times faster than manual translation and still keeps the brand voice.

Does installing a translation plugin slow the website

It does have an effect, since data multiplies with the number of languages. Choosing a lean plugin, turning on caching and reviewing how to speed up a WordPress website keeps it under control. If a website is already slow, fix that root problem before adding languages.

If I use WPML now, will I lose data by moving to MONA Multilingual

You do not start over. The plugin detects the installed WPML and steps aside, and we switch over part by part, keeping the old translations until the new part replaces them.

Choosing a translation plugin is choosing how you operate, not choosing a name

You can check three things yourself today: whether your website has hreflang tags, whether the interface strings are fully translated, and where your installed translation plugin came from. Once you answer those three questions, you know where your website stands.

If you want someone to check with you, send your domain to us at 1900 636 648. The MONA technical team will do a quick review and tell you plainly what to keep and what to change. If you are about to build a new multilingual website, see MONA's WordPress website design service : multilingual support is planned from the design stage, and the bundled plugins are genuine and free for you from the start.
