Online payment methods: hidden fees and held funds

After 14,000+ web projects, we see that your biggest pain is choosing online payment methods without being bitten by unreasonable fees. By the figures we checked on 19/09/2026, PayPal charges 4.40% plus a fixed fee for commercial transactions outside Vietnam, and each withdrawal to a Vietnamese bank costs another 60,000 VND. It's a painful amount of money to lose.
This article goes through each way of receiving money, from expensive foreign gateways to MONA Pay with 500 free transactions a month. You will understand how money actually travels and how to set up the MONA Pay Webhook, signed with HMAC-SHA256 and a timestamp, to match orders automatically. Our advice: if you sell to Vietnamese customers who are used to bank transfers or scanning VietQR, don't use Stripe. Long settlement waits and a percentage taken from every transaction will eat your net profit.
Online payment methods and why money gets stuck on the way

Clients who come to us for a store website often hit this: the order closes, the balance in the app goes up, but the real money is not in your pocket yet, it is stuck. The funds sit on an intermediary platform, so you wait several days for settlement or pay steep withdrawal fees to pull the money out, and many shop owners put up with it because they think that is just how it works.
Picture receiving international payments through PayPal: your account is charged 4.40% plus a fixed fee immediately. The money still does not go straight to your personal bank. Every time you place a withdrawal from this gateway to a Vietnamese bank, under the fee table dated 28/05/2026, the system takes another 60,000 VND per transaction. The alternative, Stripe, is not officially open to Vietnamese legal entities at the moment.
To fix the money-holding problem at its root, we built our own payment notification system for internal use in 2022, originally to confirm server renewal fees automatically. The crucial difference is that the moment a customer scans the payment QR code, the money goes straight into the bank account in your name. MONA does not hold your money. Our system only stands outside and reads the balance-change notification from ACB, then immediately pushes the data to the software to clear the order automatically. To set up the account link, you enter an OTP code twice, sent directly to the shop owner's phone, and we commit to never touching your bank password.
Our server infrastructure has carried real traffic for four years without dropping a single notification, so we felt confident packaging it into MONA Pay automatic payment gateway for everyone to use. We do not charge a percentage on the money you receive. Each account gets 500 API calls free every month with all features. Payouts and webhook retries are exempt and are never deducted from this base quota.
For foreign customers you will have to hold your nose and use an intermediary gateway and accept losing part of your revenue. For domestic customers who are used to scanning transfer codes, connect this direct payment notification system to your website so the money goes straight into your account at once. The software matches orders automatically.
What is online payment, and why hasn't your money arrived three days after the transfer?

A customer completes the order and gets charged, but when you open your banking app the balance hasn't changed. We see this letdown in almost every shop owner who is starting out integrate online payment into your website, because everyone assumes the money moves straight from the customer's pocket to theirs. In fact it is sitting at a transit stop.
The transit stop holds your money for a few days for reconciliation before you can withdraw it, and takes a fee that cuts into already thin per-order margins. We checked the fee page of PayPal Vietnam, updated 28/05/2026: a transaction outside Vietnam costs 4.40% plus a fixed fee, and withdrawing to a Vietnamese account costs another 60,000 VND. Looking at Stripe's list of supported countries as of 19/09/2026 , Singapore and Thailand are there, but Vietnam is missing. Fees on top of fees, and money arrives too slowly.
We struggled the same way when we started. The automatic payment notification system was first something we coded only to collect hosting fees and Khánh Hùng Academy tuition for MONA itself, so money went straight to the company account with no intermediary. After a while, with web design clients using the internal version too, in early 2026 we cleaned up the code and opened it to the public as MONA Pay, with 500 free transactions a month. The customer's payment lands directly in your bank account, and we take no percentage of the amount. We have run this infrastructure for ourselves for a long time.
When your main customers are Vietnamese and like scanning a transfer QR code, don't use an intermediary payment gateway and get your money held for no reason. Connect your system straight to the bank. Your own money should be in your own hands.
E-wallets vs payment gateways: where do the fees differ?

You sell an order to a foreign customer, the money shows in the wallet, and when you withdraw to a bank account in Vietnam you're hit with a 60,000 VND deduction. That's on top of the 4.40% plus 0.30 USD already taken the moment the customer paid. This part hurts. We understand how it feels to watch intermediary costs eat your net profit, because we see it in many shop owners' systems.
The core difference is how the money travels. According to our check on 28/05/2026 of PayPal Vietnam's terms, withdrawal is a second step after receiving, which means the money is held in the system. With a system like MONA Pay, which we wire in directly, the buyer transfers and the money lands in the shop owner's own bank account with no intermediary. The system only stands outside and reads the transaction notification, for example from ACB, then reports to the software to close the order. Connecting only requires confirming with an OTP code twice, sent to your phone, and MONA never keeps your password.
The MONA Pay free plan gives 500 transactions a month with all features. If your orders jump to 2,000 transactions, you pay a flat 99,000 VND with no percentage taken from the amount received. Payouts and resent webhooks are not charged either. Many MONA clients run two flows in parallel to optimize cost: keep an international gateway for foreign customers, and for domestic orders don't share profit with a third party when the money can go straight to your personal account.
QR bank transfer payment: money arrives directly but accounting waits for a screenshot

At eleven at night, a customer sends a screenshot of a successful transfer and keeps pushing for delivery. The page staff are lost: the accountant is asleep and the boss holds the company account. The order is stuck.
The money reaches the account directly, but making people act as the scanner is the price of traditional QR codes. VietQR scanning is free, and the shop owner opens the phone, sees the balance go up and feels safe. Once volume passes 50 orders a day, your staff are scrambling to match each transfer by hand, and selling turns into hours of tiring waiting. Paying high wages for staff to stay up at night is painful enough; worse is when a customer deliberately transfers 10,000 VND short, the staff glance and create the order, and you lose money without knowing.
We have been through this ourselves while running our internal ecosystem. We built this payment notification system to collect money for MONA first, from hosting renewals to Khánh Hùng Academy tuition. Only after taking over many systems whose overnight reconciliation kept breaking did we decide to split out the core, and in early 2026 open it to the public as MONA Pay automatic payment gateway with 500 free transactions a month. We charge no percentage on the money customers transfer because the infrastructure already runs, and adding users costs almost nothing extra. With a dynamic QR code that has the amount filled in, the customer scans and it matches exactly; if they deliberately edit the content, the webhook still reports the real amount so the software recognizes it correctly.
The unified QR transfer method is the right fit for Vietnamese customers; never use it to collect from foreign customers. Stop making your staff sit and watch screenshots. Use integrate online payment into your website to take human eyes out of confirmation and let the computer do all the reconciliation.
The trap of wiring up an international gateway yourself: a 4.40% fee and 60,000 VND per withdrawal

In a month you sell thousands of orders on the web. Revenue looks high, but at reconciliation the amount you actually received is short by a large sum. Money evaporates. Attaching the wrong payment gateway for Vietnamese customers is the quietest way to burn money that shop owners run into.
Many clients come to MONA for a website wanting to automate right away, so they attach an international gateway for convenience: any customer can pay by card and there is less manual checking. The money is lost through exactly this thinking.
The real fees of an international gateway
Many people read guides online and have staff integrate PayPal into the website without reading the seller fee schedule carefully. According to the official PayPal Vietnam announcement, each commercial transaction is charged 4.40% plus a fixed fee. When we took over a rebuild for a cosmetics store and checked the transaction logs, we found they had lost nearly 5% of revenue on every order for a full year. All because they let customers pay by Visa, billed in USD through a foreign gateway, when their buyers were all in Vietnam.
PayPal and Stripe were built to receive money from abroad. If you sell to Vietnamese buyers and force them onto a foreign gateway, the system both takes steep fees and complicates the process so customers get confused and leave.
Withdrawal fees to a Vietnamese bank
You pay a fee when the customer pays, and are charged again when you take the money out. When a customer pays successfully the money sits in the foreign wallet and does not go straight to your bank. Each time you withdraw to an account opened in Vietnam, you pay another 60,000 VND. This adds up fast.
MONA's advice for this part is simple. Don't burn money on a foreign gateway. If you sell to Vietnamese people, use direct domestic bank transfer only, so money goes straight to your account with no reconciliation wait or percentage fee. Foreign gateways are only for when you truly go international and sell directly to people in the US or Europe.
Look back at the intermediary fees taken last month, plus the staff hours spent staying up at night waiting for transfer screenshots. This bottleneck has to go. If you want money to go straight into your account, we integrate the MONA Pay automatic payment confirmation service.

Popular online payment methods for different business models

A customer stands holding their phone waiting to scan while your staff fumble to read out account numbers, and when money doesn't move, revenue stands still. Your spa needs a dynamic VietQR code generated right on the screen so customers can scan and be done, while an e-commerce marketplace needs a flow that integrate online payment into your website covers all kinds of cards. Selling to the US and asking for bank transfer loses customers, because they only pay by Visa/Mastercard in USD. Choose wrong and you lose money. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut; MONA Pay Free plan: free, 500 transactions a month with all features (checked by us on 19/09/2026).
At handover we see that your biggest fear is a third party taking a percentage of revenue on every order. We first coded this payment notification system for internal use, to carry thousands of hosting fee collections for mona.host and Khánh Hùng Academy tuition without missing a beat. In 2026 we opened it to the public at monapay.vn with 500 free transactions a month and no percentage, because the servers are already paid for.
Linking an ACB account goes through two OTP codes sent by the bank directly to the account holder's phone number. We hold no passwords at all. Drop the idea of cramming every payment gateway onto your storefront to fill the space. Turn on a Visa/Mastercard gateway only if you sell cross-border. For domestic customers, go straight to a dynamic QR code.
How have MONA's clients added online payment to their websites?

Clients who come to MONA for a store website often face this: at 11 pm a customer is shopping online, reaches the payment step and stalls in front of a static account number. They fumble over what to write in the transfer content, transfer, then screenshot it and send it over Zalo and wait for staff to reconcile. The next morning when staff open their computers, the customer has long since gone and bought elsewhere. The customer is gone. You are paying for a bloated operations team just to watch bank messages.
Solving the multi-channel problem
Rather than juggling intermediary e-wallets, we advise clients to configure money to go straight to the company bank account and let the software match orders automatically. We first built this payment notification system to clear debts for MONA itself, collecting mona.host hosting renewals and Khánh Hùng Academy tuition, and since the servers already ran, we decided not to take a percentage on each transaction. When we install it for clients, accountants are often surprised that they no longer have to stare at a screen waiting for balance messages. You only need to integrate MONA Pay to handle the first 500 transactions each month completely free, with no charge for money in or webhook calls sent.
No more waiting around for payment alerts
Now the dynamic QR code appears with the exact amount and order code filled in. If the customer edits the amount, the webhook still reports the real amount received so our software can clear the balance automatically. We lock down security with webhooks signed with HMAC-SHA256 and a timestamp, and the system flatly rejects packets more than 5 minutes out of sync to block forged requests. Linking an ACB account must go through two OTP codes the bank sends to the business owner's phone, and we never touch the bank password. On 15/09 we connected payment notification for an internal product, and because of a webhook configuration error with an empty key, a customer transferred money but the wallet didn't credit the balance. We rushed back through the source code, set the correct secret key, then transferred real money from our own personal account to test before letting it run again. We test with real money. If you sell to Vietnamese customers, we advise you to integrate online payment into your website with a dynamic QR code starting today, and if you sell to US customers, drop the domestic transfer system and move to a Visa/Mastercard gateway.
Automatic payment confirmation with MONA Pay, no intermediary

Clients come to MONA complaining about accountants who open their phones to look up transaction codes, eyes on the computer screen, striking out Excel lines one by one, because the old system broke the order-matching flow. We first built this payment notification system to collect our own money. Since 2022, every hosting fee for mona.host, tuition for Khánh Hùng Academy and Mona.Software order has been paid through it: the money alert arrives, the order closes itself, and the customer's transfer is all it takes. When you sell to Vietnamese customers by VietQR scan, plug this tool straight into your software so money goes directly to your account and avoids anyone taking a percentage. It is very low-stress. MONA Pay gives 500 transactions every month. The paid plan is 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions, priced by volume, with no percentage cut at all on transaction amounts, per the fee schedule we checked on 19/09/2026.
Money goes straight to the owner's account
The customer scans a dynamic QR code with the amount filled in, and the money goes straight into your bank. No intermediary. Linking an ACB account takes two OTP codes sent by the bank to the account holder's phone, and we hold no password. On 15/09/2026, when we connected payment notification between two internal products, the webhook key was mismatched, and the server sent an empty key, so the receiving side returned a 401 error. A customer transferred money and the wallet wasn't credited. We traced it, reset the key, and verified with a real transaction on 17/09, and only felt settled once the webhook returned 200 and the balance was credited correctly. From that we set a hard rule: every payment notification key must be tested with real money before going live. The MONA Pay webhook is signed with HMAC-SHA256 and a timestamp, and the receiver rejects any packet more than 5 minutes out of sync to block forged replays. Use it if you sell domestically by bank transfer; don't use it to accept Visa/Mastercard from foreign customers.
500 transactions free to start
This payment notification system just opened to the public at monapay.vn in 2026. We take no percentage of the amount, because the infrastructure already runs for ourselves and adding users costs almost nothing extra. You get 500 free transactions a month. If you go over in the first month the server is lenient; in the following month the system stops reporting the excess until you upgrade your plan yourself, and it never charges you automatically. Payouts, sandbox data and webhook retries caused by errors do not count toward the plan. Everything is straightforward. When you want to integrate online payment into your website for a shop or an online course, connect directly to this payment notification API. Never integrate through intermediaries that hold the money for you.
Frequently asked questions about online payment for websites

Working with dozens of business owners, we see that everyone fears handing their whole cash flow to a third-party system. You worry the money gets held midway and your bank login details leak. You worry even more that if the system fails, you won't know where your money is stuck. That unease keeps many people tied to manual Excel sheets. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut; MONA Pay Free plan: free, 500 transactions a month with all features (checked by us on 19/09/2026). In the standard flow we set up, money from the customer goes straight into the company's own bank account, with no stop in between. The only job of the MONA Pay is to stand outside, read the balance-change notification and immediately signal the software to clear the order automatically. It is your money, and you hold it yourself.
The account link is set up with exactly two OTP verification codes sent by ACB straight to the account holder's personal phone, and never touches a password. The payment notification webhook is signed with HMAC-SHA256 and a timestamp, and the system automatically rejects any notice more than five minutes out of sync to rule out transaction forgery.
The safety principle that never changes is that the owner holds the handle. When you decide to integrate online payment into your website, you give the machine only the job of reading balance notifications. Never give it the power to move your money.
Choose the right payment flow so you can grow with confidence

When you are just starting out with a few orders a day, it's normal for the shop owner or accountant to open the app, check the balance and clear payments by hand. But once the business grows to dozens of branches or runs a campaign bringing in hundreds of orders a day, sitting waiting on bank messages becomes a bottleneck that stops growth. We felt exactly that while running the MONA ecosystem.
In 2022 we had to code our own payment notification system to collect Khánh Hùng Academy tuition, renew mona.host and close Mona.Software orders automatically. In early 2026 it was finally opened to the public as MONA Pay, with 500 free transactions every month and no percentage fee, since the servers already carry our internal data flow anyway.
What makes the automated flow work is a secure channel running quietly between the bank and the server. Each time a customer clicks buy, the system generates a dynamic QR code with the exact amount filled in down to the last dong, and the order code as the transfer content. The customer scans and transfers the right amount. Right away, a webhook carrying an HMAC-SHA256 signature and a timestamp is sent to the server to confirm the order. If the time is off by more than 5 minutes, the system rejects the data. Nobody can forge it.
If you sell courses, software or retail to Vietnamese customers, just wire this automatic VietQR flow into your website. The money is in your pocket at once. Your accountant is free of waiting until end of day to reconcile statement lines one by one. But if you target international markets and collect by Visa/Mastercard, you will have to wire up PayPal and accept the percentage fee. Never attach this direct notification flow to e-commerce marketplace models that need to hold money and split it among several parties.
A manifesto for growing together
MONA is a software, digital transformation and AI transformation company, but above all, MONA is a B2B service company that benefits directly from this: THE MORE SUCCESSFUL VIETNAMESE BUSINESSES BECOME, THE MORE MONA BENEFITS, while a declining, slow market with weak technology is exactly what kills MONA's future business opportunities. And AI transformation is the key to that success for all of us.
