Integrating PayPal into your website: costs and how to cut them

After 14,000+ projects, we see many clients ask how to integrate PayPal into their website because they assume it is a gateway every site must have. For customers in the US or Europe it works very smoothly. For Vietnamese customers it is a different story. Our check on 28/05/2026 shows PayPal charges up to 4.40% plus a fixed fee per transaction. The math is simple: if you collect 1 billion VND a month, almost 44 million VND goes to fees, before counting 60,000 VND each time you withdraw to a domestic bank. That is a lot of money to give away.
In this article we break down the fee table, show the limits, and walk you through configuring the gateway on your website to the proper technical standard so your money is not held up for no reason. Our honest advice: if you only sell to customers in Vietnam, use a domestic bank-transfer notification gateway instead of forcing an international one. Otherwise you lose money to fees every month and make buying harder for your customers.
Cross-border selling requires payments built into your website

Foreign customers fill their cart, reach checkout and leave, simply because your site only shows a Vietnamese bank account number. We see this again and again when we build sites for workshops that export to the US or Europe: overseas buyers are used to paying by card in USD and don't have a Vietnamese banking app to scan a code. A payment gateway is a must.
Everyone in the trade knows how smoothly Stripe works. The catch: the supported-country list we checked on 19/09/2026 includes Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia but not Vietnam. Under its terms Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents for domestic cards, plus 1.5% for Visa/Mastercard and 1% for currency conversion. Those rates are reasonable, but a Vietnamese shop simply has no way to sign up for a Stripe payment gateway.
The practical option left is PayPal, today's familiar route for receiving money from abroad. In return you carry the fee schedule updated on 28/05/2026: up to 4.40% plus a fixed fee per currency on every international commercial transaction. The customer's payment then waits in the PayPal wallet, and when you withdraw to a Vietnamese bank the system takes another 60,000 VND each time, forcing your accountants into two clumsy bookkeeping steps. And if the system suspects a dispute, PayPal freezes that money immediately. Sell 1 billion VND in a month through a 4.40% gateway and almost 44 million VND disappears in fees, before the fixed fee and withdrawals. It hurts to watch.
As painful as that is, skipping PayPal integration still means closing the door early on international customers. We recommend using it only to collect from foreign customers, and never routing Vietnamese customers' domestic bank transfers through PayPal.
Can Vietnamese customers use PayPal to pay by bank transfer?

It is eleven at night and you open your laptop to find an empty cart. A customer who was about to buy a 2 million VND course left the page halfway, because the payment screen asked them to log in and enter a Visa/Mastercard number. PayPal has no local bank transfer option for Vietnamese customers, while according to a Statista report QR code payments make up most e-commerce transactions in Vietnam. Small shoppers will not pay by USD card. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut (checked by us on 19/09/2026).
When we take over a client's system, we measure order drop-off of up to 60% when buyers must type in card details instead of scanning a code. You are driving customers away. We once rescued a training center whose first-month revenue fell sharply only because PayPal was their sole gateway. When you integrate PayPal, buyers are pushed through a complicated flow, while Vietnamese customers prefer to open their banking app, scan and be done. When you integrate online payment into your website, your system has to adapt to how customers actually pay if you want to keep the order.
Many advisors say turn on every gateway to maximize choice, but when we look at the checkout screen, that only clutters it and makes buyers hesitate. If you target the domestic market, switch this gateway off. Don't use PayPal if your customers need to close orders fast on their phones. Prioritize an automatic payment gateway like MONA Pay so customers can scan a local bank QR code without friction. Money arrives faster.
PayPal fees: on 1 billion VND in revenue, almost 44 million VND goes to fees

At month end your accountant exports the reconciliation file and is shocked: what actually arrived is a big chunk short, because PayPal charges 4.40% plus a fixed fee on each transaction outside Vietnam, per the fee schedule we checked on 28/05/2026. It is a painful calculation. Sell 1 billion VND a month through this gateway and 44 million VND goes in fees, enough to pay two solid employees, gone on the way to your account.
Money lands in the PayPal wallet first and can only be withdrawn afterwards, so your accounting team books it in two clumsy steps. Every time you withdraw PayPal funds to a Vietnamese bank, the company account is automatically charged 60,000 VND per withdrawal, and profit wears away.
We felt the pain of these fees ourselves, so we built our own payment notification system in 2022 to collect money internally. Every web design contract and hosting purchase runs through it, which lets us keep our real revenue intact. In 2026 we opened it to the public at monapay.vn with 500 free transactions a month. We charge no percentage because the server infrastructure already runs for our own use, and adding accounts costs no extra resources. When your orders pass the free tier, MONA Pay you pay only a fixed 99,000 VND plan for 2,000 transactions, and the full amount your customer transfers stays with you.
A percentage-cut model only makes sense when selling to foreign customers. For customers buying in Vietnam, switch to a flat-fee system to protect your cash flow. Stop cutting into your own margin.
Money in a PayPal wallet is not money in your pocket yet

Your accountant checks the books. A customer sent a screenshot showing payment succeeded on Thursday afternoon, but by Monday morning the company account still has no incoming alert. The customer is angry and you are confused. In fact the money is stuck in a virtual intermediate layer, because this gateway by default only accepts foreign currency and does not allow domestic VND bank transfers. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut (checked by us on 19/09/2026). We checked the figures before writing.
When we remove an old payment gateway for a client, many are surprised to find their working capital held up for no reason and their books doubled in size. Instead of recording revenue once, cleanly, accounting now has to book every small transaction by hand into that virtual wallet. When you need cash for stock, you place a withdrawal to a Vietnamese bank and grit your teeth over another 60,000 VND for every successful transfer.
As soon as the system flags a single customer dispute, the platform freezes your entire balance without asking you. When you choose to integrate PayPal into your website, you are voluntarily handing your company's lifeblood cash flow to a system controlled across the Pacific.
Keep this gateway only if you sell digital products or receive foreign currency directly from US and European markets. For domestic shoppers, attach a VietQR code so the money flows straight into your company account. Your money should go into your own pocket.
Integrating PayPal into your website to get paid by international customers

A US customer fills a cart of cosmetics worth 2,000 USD, then leaves at checkout because they can't find the familiar blue P logo. Picture 10 customers like that: your company loses 20,000 USD in revenue every month. A total loss.
When we take on an online store project, we see many business owners focus only on getting money straight into a Vietnamese bank and forget their international customers. MONA Pay only handles domestic transfers. To collect foreign currency you do need PayPal, and accepting a few percent in fees beats pushing customers through an intermediary and losing them from the funnel.
According to a report from Statista, PayPal had more than 400 million active accounts in 2023. US and European customers are very reluctant to type a Visa number into an unfamiliar website in Vietnam, but they will happily pay through PayPal because they know it will refund them at once if the goods aren't as promised. Integrating PayPal into your website is how you spend a small fee to buy peace of mind for this group of customers.
When we handled the WooCommerce online store for a handicraft workshop, we had to clean up after the shop owner installed a free plugin and wired the webhook wrongly. Foreign customers paid by card, the money showed up in the PayPal wallet, but the website still showed the order as unpaid. The page staff had to open two tabs every morning and match each transaction code by hand. A huge waste of time. We reconfigured the API flow correctly, and since then, the moment money lands in the wallet, the order switches to shipping status automatically.
Don't use PayPal to collect from domestic customers, because withdrawing foreign currency to a Vietnamese bank is very cumbersome and loses a lot to exchange rates. Treat this gateway as a trust filter for collecting foreign currency from international markets.
If you carry the 4.40% fee plus 60,000 VND per withdrawal on all your Vietnamese orders, you are cutting your own profit. That is wasteful. We invite you to see how to run PayPal for foreign customers together with the MONA Pay bank API, so Vietnamese customers' money goes straight to your account.

The DIY trap: a wrongly configured webhook loses your payment confirmations

A customer sends a screenshot of a successful transfer. Their bank account was debited long ago, yet the order on your website still waits for payment. You have to drop what you are doing and open the banking app to check statements by hand, while the customer keeps pushing because they think they have been scammed.
When you integrate PayPal yourself or wire up an automatic payment notification gateway, a missed transaction confirmation damages trust faster than anything else. Most of the time the cause lies in the configuration webhook. A signing key that is off by one character, a response slower than five minutes, or a return data format that doesn't match will each break the flow. One small slip and it's gone.
On 15/09/2026, while connecting the payment notification feature between two of our internal products, a mismatched webhook key made the request carry an empty key, and the receiving side immediately returned a 401 error and blocked the flow. A customer transferred money and the wallet showed no balance for three hours. We went through the logs line by line, fixed the key, then verified with a real transaction on 17/09. The flow returned code 200. The balance was credited correctly.
Don't have an employee wire up a payment gateway if they have never paid with a real card to test the actual money flow.
How to integrate PayPal into your website and run it alongside MONA Pay

Many clients who come to MONA for a website get stuck at payment: they want to collect dollars from foreign customers and also let Vietnamese customers pay by ordinary bank transfer. Picture a US customer with a Visa card ready to buy a handicraft item, but the site only offers a domestic account, so they give up. Or the site has only PayPal and a customer in Hanoi is asked to create an account, so they turn around. Money is right there in front of you. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut (checked by us on 19/09/2026).
We solve this with automatic routing based on IP location. When a foreign IP visits, the system moves PayPal to the top of the payment options. They enter a Visa card and the money flows into your business wallet in USD. Connecting the API is simple; the hard part we have worked through in building foreign gateways is a real-time exchange rate flow so your accountant doesn't end up with a mess at month end.
For Vietnamese IPs, the system hides the international gateway and shows a QR code through the MONA Pay automatic bank transfer confirmation system. Customers scan with their phone, the money lands in your account and the order closes itself. That gives you two separate channels, so both Vietnamese and USD cash flow run smoothly.
If you save a few cents of fees by forcing customers into your own way of paying, you will lose wholesale orders from foreign buyers right at checkout for lack of a payment option. The loss is much bigger.
Automatic payment notification also works for retail chains and education

Accountants sit watching their phones all day for bank messages, and cashiers ask customers to screenshot the transfer and send it over Zalo to confirm by hand. When we take over systems for retail chains and language centers, we always see staff panicking because their order process is stuck on this manual step. Everything is in a tangle. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut (checked by us on 19/09/2026).
Instead of having cashiers check every balance change by hand, an automatic payment notification system reconciles in real time. The dynamic QR code is printed with the amount and order code already filled in, and once the customer scans it, the software matches the payment and clears the debt immediately.
If you run a shop or sell software or courses to Vietnamese customers, the strongest approach is still to let customers scan a VietQR code so money goes straight into your bank account with no intermediary. The problem we often see when you make a static QR code yourself is that buyers edit the amount or forget the order code, and your accountant spends ages chasing it. With the MONA Pay webhook, even if the customer edits the amount, the system still takes the exact amount received and decides whether to approve or cancel the order. PayPal integration or Visa/Mastercard acceptance only pays off when you sell to customers in the US or Europe.
For domestic customers, just integrate online payment into your website through a domestic gateway. Don't use a foreign payment gateway to carry Vietnamese transactions, because the percentage fee eats your profit every day.
Frequently asked questions about PayPal in Vietnam and the MONA Pay system

Say a foreign customer clicks pay on a 200 USD cart, but at the checkout step the system throws a red error, and you lose that revenue in an instant. We run into this constantly when fixing retail websites that were assembled from open-source code. The money lost is so needless. Last month we fixed a scented candle shop whose account was locked for no clear reason; we removed all the old code and hooked in the proper API so money could flow again. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut (checked by us on 19/09/2026).
On top of that, currency conversion and PayPal withdrawal fees always take a big bite of profit. Picture a customer paying in dollars: the system deducts the transaction fee by default, and when you withdraw to a Vietnamese bank you pay another layer of exchange-rate fees at a tight margin. Rather than accept losing money for nothing, see the PayPal integration process we are building for education chains, which avoids the technical gaps that inflate fees.
The third nightmare is a checkout page that loads slowly because of poor API calls. A pause of just five seconds and a foreign customer suspects a scam, closes the browser and abandons the cart. To stop lost orders at the root, connect your data flow straight into the MONA Pay automatic payment gateway. Never build your own payment gateway unless you have a strong dev team on hand to maintain it.
Keep your full cash flow every month

Having your accountant look up each transaction code on a phone is a thing of the past. Now you see money arrive automatically, but still get bitten by fees, which hurts. Clients who come to MONA for a store website often complain about the fees to keep a payment gateway running: each transaction loses a few tens of thousands of dong, which looks small, but over a month it adds up to a huge hole in profit. We once handled the system for a business owner collecting 1 billion VND a month through an international gateway. At month end he calculated that almost 44 million VND went to fees, before the fixed fees and 60,000 VND per withdrawal. The money was stuck in an intermediate wallet, and the accountant had to book it in two clumsy steps.
We originally wrote this payment notification system ourselves to collect tuition and service fees for MONA. Since 2022, when clients custom software or build management systems, we have integrated payment collection through it smoothly. In early 2026 we expanded it into the MONA Pay automatic payment gateway, with 500 free transactions a month. We do not charge any percentage on transaction amounts, because the server infrastructure already runs stably and adding users costs almost nothing in hardware. The customer scans the code, the money goes straight into your account, and the system immediately sends webhook an order status update. We do not hold your money.
If you have foreign customers paying by Visa or Mastercard, you will have to use an international gateway and accept the percentage fee. But for businesses that sell to Vietnamese customers and receive bank transfers, never let your cash flow detour through a third party that holds it for you. The money you earn should sit in your own account.
A manifesto for growing together
MONA is a software, digital transformation and AI transformation company, but above all, MONA is a B2B service company that benefits directly from this: THE MORE SUCCESSFUL VIETNAMESE BUSINESSES BECOME, THE MORE MONA BENEFITS, while a declining, slow market with weak technology is exactly what kills MONA's future business opportunities. So, more than anyone, MONA wants you to succeed, and MONA actually steps in to help you succeed.
And AI transformation is the key to that success for all of us.

How will you calculate your payment costs next?
Look back at the 4.40% fee taken from every order from foreign customers, plus the 60,000 VND withdrawal fee each time you consolidate funds, and you must feel the loss. We understand you have been trying to find a way out. Many business owners add PayPal and then use it for domestic buyers too, so accounting can manage everything in one place. That breaks immediately. Vietnamese customers used to scanning QR codes can't pay through PayPal and leave the page, while accounting still has to double-book every day because the money is stuck in the e-wallet and hasn't reached the bank. We usually advise clients to run two separate flows in parallel. Foreign customers pay by Visa through PayPal, and Vietnamese customers scan a code through the bank API and the MONA Pay automatic payment confirmation service, with money going straight to your account instantly and the first 500 transactions free. Call 1900 636 648 and we will look at how many hours it takes to add the new flow to your site. MONA Pay: free for 500 transactions a month; 99,000 VND for 2,000 transactions; no percentage cut (checked by us on 19/09/2026).
