What is Wix? Should you build a website with it?

Build a website on a Sunday afternoon without writing a line of code: that is Wix's promise, and the promise is real. Wix is a drag-and-drop website builder that runs on the company's own cloud. You pick a template, drag content blocks into place and hit publish, and the site is live, with Wix handling hosting and the technical side. The real question is something else: will that site fit your business over the next 2 to 3 years? In this article we answer it with numbers: the real price of each plan, what Wix does well, where it locks you in, and a comparison with WordPress so you can decide for yourself. It takes about 10 minutes to read.
What is Wix?
Wix is a subscription website service: everything from the page builder and templates to hosting and security comes in one plan, paid monthly. It has more than 800 industry templates, a drag-and-drop editor for free-form layouts, and an AI layer that drafts a page in 2 to 3 minutes from a few lines of description.

Understand this from the start: Wix is a fully serviced rental, fundamentally different from the self-owned model of website running WordPress, where you rent your own plot of land and hold your own keys. A full-service rental is great when you move in and restrictive when you want to move out, and the rest of this article revolves around exactly that trade-off. Easy at the start, tied in later.
What does Wix do well?
To be fair, there are things Wix really does well, and does well from day one:
- Speed to launch: from zero to a finished site in 1 to 2 days, and someone with no technical background can do it all themselves.
- No operations to worry about: hosting, certificates SSL, and security updates are all automatic, so there is no such thing as a site infected with malware because of a bad install.
- Ready-made templates: a library of polished templates by industry, all responsive on phones.
- Basic features covered: forms, booking, a blog, a small shop, plus connecting Google Analytics and setting up structured data are all possible.
For a personal site, a company profile, or a small shop that needs 5 to 7 pages with opening hours and a map, Wix is a reasonable choice. You can build it yourself in a weekend, and we say so even though building websites is our business. Small job, small tool. The right size is the best fit.
Where does Wix fall short?
Four weak spots, all of which only show up after 3 to 6 months of use:

- Can't move out: this is the heaviest one. A site built on Wix cannot be exported to run somewhere else, Wix's own documentation states this limit clearly. Leaving means rebuilding the site from scratch somewhere new.
- Fees that never end: stop paying monthly and the site stops. There is no pay-once, use-for-the-long-term option.
- A ceiling on customization: if you need a feature outside the vendor's app store, such as connecting your own management software or a special business workflow, you hit the ceiling right away.
- Changing templates is nearly a rebuild: content does not flow into a new template on its own, the way it does on systems that CMS separate the design from the content.

Put these 4 points together and you get what people in the industry call platform lock-in: the more pages a site has and the older it gets, the higher the cost of leaving, sometimes 60 to 80% of the cost of building a new website, and the weaker your bargaining position with the vendor. This isn't Wix being unfair. Every full-service rental model works this way. Better to know up front than to be surprised.
Wix pricing and 3-year total cost of ownership
According to the price list on Wix's plans page, the monthly reference prices are 0, 17, 29, 39 and 159 USD. The free plan carries Wix ads and runs on a Wix subdomain. For serious business use you need the 17 USD plan or higher to connect your own domain, and to sell and accept payments you need the 29 USD plan.

Here is a 3-year calculation for easy comparison: the 17 USD plan times 36 months is 612 USD, roughly 15 to 16 million VND, not including the domain and any paid apps you add. On the self-owned side, a standard WordPress site costs a one-time build fee, plus hosting a domain at about 1 to 3 million VND a year, and the asset is yours permanently, to take anywhere. Wix is cheap in month one, not in year three. Count all 36 months before you choose.
SEO, speed and payments in Vietnam
The three most practical questions for users in Vietnam, answered briefly:

Can you do SEO? Yes, at a basic level, and the basic setup takes 2 hours: you can edit titles, descriptions and sitemaps and add schema. But the deeper items technical SEO such as editing source code, tuning load time to the millisecond and custom data structures hit the platform ceiling, and the performance score Core Web Vitals of a heavy multi-page Wix site tends to lag a hand-optimized one. For easy keywords it is enough. For hard keyword phrases against competitors with their own SEO team, the disadvantage is clear.
Payments in Vietnam? Wix's list of supported payment gateways varies by country. The Vietnam market lacks many familiar domestic gateways, and bank transfers and Vietnamese e-wallets usually have to be handled by hand. If you sell to Vietnamese customers and the payment flow has problems, you lose the order at the last step. Checking the gateways takes 15 minutes. Do it before you pay for an annual plan.
Wix vs WordPress: comparison by use case

| Criterion | Wix | Self-owned WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Ra web nhanh | 1 to 2 days, can do it yourself | 1 to 6 weeks depending on investment |
| Cost | 17 to 159 USD a month, ongoing | Build once, then 1 to 3 million VND a year to maintain |
| Ownership | Rented on Wix's land, can't be exported | Code, data and domain all belong to you |
| Customization | Within the app store's limits | Almost no ceiling, you can work at the code level |
| Long-term SEO | Enough for the basics, hits a ceiling on hard keywords | Full control to optimize to WordPress SEO standards |
| Operations | The vendor handles everything | You handle it or hire it, in return for full control |
Read the table with one question: is this website a business card or your main way of finding customers? For a business card, Wix is enough and easy. For a main lead channel, which needs long-term SEO, software integration and ownership of your data, the self-owned model wins over time. The gap compounds and is clearly visible after 24 months, and 3 years of Wix subscription already equals the cost of building your own site. You can answer that question yourself. Being honest with yourself is all it takes.
So should you use Wix?
Yes, if you fall into one of three groups: individuals who need a clean online profile; small shops that need an intro page with a map and opening hours; or short projects of 3 to 6 months that need an event page and nothing more. For these three groups, Wix's speed and ease pay off best.

No, if your website is your main sales channel, you need to compete seriously on SEO, you need smooth domestic payments, or your business has its own processes that need software connected to the website. For this group, choosing Wix saves 2 to 3 weeks at the start and then costs you a ceiling for years afterward, plus the cost of rebuilding from scratch when you have to leave. That rebuild usually costs more than doing it right the first time. Choose according to your group.
Thinking of trying Wix? Check these 5 things first

- Buy the domain separately in your own name, and manage it somewhere neutral, following the guide on domain management, rather than bundling it into Wix, so you can take it with you when you leave.
- List the features you need in the next 2 years, then check the Wix app store to see if it covers them. Any missing item becomes your ceiling.
- Check Vietnamese payment gateways if you plan to sell, using the list link above.
- Accept the no-export rule up front: treat everything you publish on Wix as something you will have to redo if you move, and keep the original text and images on your own computer.
- Add up the 36-month total using the calculation in the pricing section, and put it next to a quote for a one-time, full website build for a fair comparison.
Checking all 5 takes about 2 hours, and it decides a cost that runs for 36 months plus all the content effort you will pour into this site, so every minute is worth it. If Wix still wins after the check, use it. Choose with a clear head.
MONA picks the platform for the problem, not for a side
We have built websites for more than 10 years, with more than 14,000 projects since 2016, and our biggest lesson sounds a bit backwards: choosing a platform is a business decision, not a technical one. Some clients come wanting a big system when what they need right now is just a landing page for a 2-month campaign, and we advise building small. Other clients plan to rent a drag-and-drop platform for their main sales channel, and we show them the 36-month calculation and they change their minds themselves.

When the job is a serious business website, we build on our website design process standards: an interface that follows your own brand identity, source code handed over with full rights, SEO-ready structure, and infrastructure hosted in Vietnam for fast local speed. Call 1900 636 648, tell us your real problem and budget, and we will answer straight, even when the answer is “in your case Wix is enough, don't spend money hiring us.” By saying so we lose one order and gain one person who trusts us, and that person comes back when the problem gets bigger. It works out in our favor anyway.
Wix FAQ
Is Wix free?
There is a free plan, but the site runs on a Wix subdomain with Wix ads, so it only suits practice builds. For business use, count from the 17 USD a month plan and up.
Can a Wix site be moved to WordPress?
There is no automatic switch. Text and images you saved yourself can be taken over, but the design and structure must be rebuilt from scratch on the new platform, and URL redirects need careful handling so you don't lose the search rankings you already have.
Can a Wix site reach the top of Google?
Yes, with lightly competitive keywords and good content. For highly competitive commercial keywords, the platform's technical optimization ceiling puts you at a disadvantage against competitors with full control of the source code.
Is Wix or WordPress easier to use?
Wix is easier in the first week because everything is prebuilt. WordPress takes 1 to 2 weeks to get used to, but after that managing content is just as easy, and there is no ceiling when you need to grow.
Verdict: Wix is good at what Wix is for
Wix keeps its promise: a fast, good-looking website with no technical skills, with an entry price of 0 to 17 USD a month. It just doesn't promise what it doesn't have: ownership, the right to leave, and a ceiling high enough for a growing business. Give Wix the small jobs, and build the vital ones on your own land.
If you are stuck on exactly this, bring 2 numbers to us: your current budget, and the revenue you expect the website to carry over the next 12 months. Call 1900 636 648 or preview business website design service. In one consultation we lay out two 36-month cost scenarios side by side, Wix on one side and a self-owned site on the other, and you decide by the numbers. Numbers don't play favorites.
