What is the Facebook News Feed and how does it work?

Quick summary: The News Feed is the content in the middle of your Facebook home page.

If you use Facebook, the term “News Feed” will be familiar. Still, many people do not know what the News Feed is or how it works. So in this article, MONA Media pulls together everything about the News Feed to give readers a clearer picture of this Facebook feature.

What is the News Feed?

What the News Feed is

What is the News Feed? News Feed is the content in the middle of your Facebook home page. It is a constantly updating list of stories from the people and fan pages you follow on Facebook.

The News Feed includes: status updates, text, images, video, links, app activity, likes and other interactions,… Facebook gives priority on the News Feed to information about friends and the groups or fan pages the user usually follows.

Sometimes the News Feed also shows paid Facebook ads. Most of these ads, however, are about things the user is already interested in.

How does the News Feed work?

Facebook works mainly around user behavior. So what appears in the News Feed is built on each user's behavior, habits and interests rather than on the content itself.

The Facebook News Feed is made up of many different posts and gives priority to the ones that match the user's interests, by working out whether they tend to like those posts, and whether they spend time reading and sharing them.

One thing worth noting about how the News Feed works is its very high level of competition. Because there are so many users, when you post alongside many other people, fewer users see your post. So to reach more people, the best approach is to post at times when fewer users are active. Competition is lower then, which increases engagement between your fan page and its followers, as well as getting SEO Facebook Page your posts into the top results.

The factors Facebook uses to predict user behavior in the News Feed

The factors Facebook uses to predict user behavior

Now that you understand what the Facebook News Feed is, how does it reach users? To show each person the content they are interested in and looking for on their News Feed, Facebook algorithm predicts this behavior based on these factors below:

  • Who posted the content?: Based on how often the user has interacted (liked, shared, commented) with the content of that poster or fan page.
  • Type of content posted: How often the user has interacted with this type of content, for example clicking to view the photos, videos or links in a post.
  • Interaction with the post: Judged by the number of likes, shares and comments on a post.
  • When the post was published: Judged by recent visits, because users always want to see the latest news.

When the evaluation ends, Facebook gives each post a “Relevance score” specific to each user, based on how interested they are in each post. This is the basis on which Facebook orders the content in a user's News Feed.

A simple way to clean up your Facebook News Feed

So what does it mean to “clean up” your News Feed, and how do you do it? Let's find out together below.

Hide post

Hiding a published post

If you do not like a post in your News Feed, you can hide it with Facebook's “Hide post” feature. It is very simple: on the post you want to hide, click the arrow at the top right of the post and choose Hide post. This also reduces how often similar posts appear in your News Feed in the future.

In addition, if you think a post is spam, you can use Report post to send feedback to Facebook. If Facebook agrees with your report, it will limit how much of that kind of content shows up in your News Feed.

Unfollowing

If someone keeps posting nonsense but you cannot unfriend them, you can choose to unfollow them instead. Just go to that person's Facebook profile, click the Following button and choose Unfollow.

Adjust your ads

Customize ads to clean up your Facebook News Feed

By default, Facebook shows a certain number of ads in your News Feed every day. These ads are chosen based on what you and your friends have interacted with that is related to them.

Sometimes, though, the News Feed shows ads that do not suit you and that annoy you. In that case, you can use Facebook's ad preferences so that your News Feed only shows ads that best fit your needs.

To adjust the ads in your News Feed, follow the steps below: Settings > Ads > Ads based on my preferences > Visit Ads Preferences.

Use Interest Lists to group your friends

Facebook has a rather interesting feature called Interest Lists. It lets you reorganize a crowded News Feed if your account has a lot of friends and follows many different fan pages.

Facebook currently offers Interest Lists such as Family; Close Friends; Restricted (people in this list will not see any new update from you unless you set a post to Public or tag them in it); and Acquaintances (people you want to keep in touch with but do not want their posts to appear often in your News Feed).

To add a friend to an Interest List, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Go to Interest Lists at https://www.facebook.com/bookmarks/lists.
  • Step 2: Click Create List, name the group, then click Confirm.
  • Step 3: Under Custom Lists you will see the list you just created. Click the list you want to build, then click Add Friends.
  • Step 4: Select the friends you want to add to the list, then click Save.

Common questions about the Facebook News Feed

Questions about the News Feed

How does the News Feed decide which content is most interesting?

The Facebook News Feed algorithm decides which posts rank at the top based on the number of likes and comments, who posted, and more. So if you feel your News Feed is missing content you want to see, or shows content you do not want to see, you can use the News Feed preferences to adjust your settings.

Why does my News Feed show posts from people who are not my friends, or from groups I am not a member of?

You may see posts from strangers in your News Feed because your friends liked or interacted with them. You may also see posts from groups you are not a member of because those are public groups. If the posts in that group match topics you care about, they will appear in your News Feed.

Why can I see in my News Feed the stories of someone who has not accepted my friend request?

When you send someone a friend request, the stories they have shared publicly can appear in your News Feed. This way you do not have to wait for them to accept your request before seeing their updates.

If you do not want to see posts from someone who has not accepted your friend request, you can hide them from your News Feed by moving your mouse to the top right of the post and clicking Hide.

Why do my posts appear in the News Feed of someone whose friend request I have not accepted?

When someone sends you a friend request, stories posted on your timeline that are set to public can appear in their News Feed. If you decline the friend request from this person, your stories will no longer appear in their News Feed.

If you are not ready to decline the request but do not want them to see your posts, you can set the audience to Private or Friends only. That way only people on your friends list can see and interact with your posts.

When friends post a status on my timeline, who can see it in their News Feed?

Content posted and shared on your timeline will appear in other places on Facebook, including the News Feeds of your friends' friends. However, you have the right to choose who is allowed to receive shares when friends post on your timeline.

So in this article, MONA Media has answered your questions about what the News Feed is and how the Facebook News Feed works. With that, you can more easily optimize your posts to reach more people and earn more engagement.
