What Is Vercel? Why Businesses Get Stuck on the Free Plan

Clients who come to MONA for an online store or software ask us about this lately more than anything else: What is Vercel, because developers often advise putting the app straight there to avoid spending money at first. We find most of you have not read the line Vercel states clearly in its terms: the free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use only, and to run a business you need Pro at 20 USD per member per month, billed in USD and excluding tax (we checked the pricing page on 19/09/2026). Running an online store on the free plan breaks the terms from day one, not to mention that functions run for 300 seconds at most and logs are kept for exactly 1 hour. Free comes with conditions.

In this post we explain what Vercel can do, where it gets stuck for Vietnamese businesses, and how we set up real servers in Vietnam for clients: billed hourly from 550 VND, paid in VND through VietQR, with a 10% VAT invoice for your accountant, and creating a machine took 11 seconds in our test on 05/09/2026. Our advice, even if it turns out wrong: if an app already has paying customers, a backend and long-running cron jobs, do not leave it on any platform's free plan, even if engineering swears it is fine.

What is Vercel and why developers like deploying Next.js to Vercel

MONA bear deploying project source code to a cloud server
With just a few commands, the dev team's entire codebase is pushed live within minutes.

Clients who come to MONA for an online store or software have lately asked us about Vercel more than anything, when their tech staff ask to approve a new cloud platform with the promise of pushing code live in seconds at no cost up front. You nod and approve, but in the back of your mind you are unsure how this system runs, where company data sits, and who to call if the site goes down mid-sale. Handing the whole revenue-generating storefront to an unfamiliar platform without understanding the basics puts yourself in a corner.

Vercel is like a relay station that turns raw code on a computer into a live website on the internet, and it handles the complicated server operations behind the scenes. Developers like it because it is heavily tuned for the Next.js framework: type one command and the code goes live. It is very convenient for beginners, which is why devs love it. The trade-off is that the company's code gets locked into a closed ecosystem, with the Vercel Pro plan at 20 USD per month per developer.

Clients who come to MONA for an online store often end up with a system tied to a foreign cloud, with no deep access when they want to add their own order-closing flow. When the project moves to local infrastructure, the process software developers really comes back into the company's hands. We measured our internal system on 05/09/2026: a server created in Vietnam gave a latency of just 5–15ms from VNPT in Ho Chi Minh City, noticeably smoother than Singapore at 30–50ms. We ran the command npx -y monacloud deploy –sandbox on a personal computer to push straight to the server without an intermediate repository, and the first app build took exactly 150 seconds. Later updates take only 10 to 20 seconds before new features appear in the live environment, and purchase data stays safe on a server located in Vietnam.

The free plan is only for tech staff to run a few internal test commands at the start. For real work, get a real server.

The truth about Vercel pricing: what are the limits of the free Vercel plan

MONA bear looking at the Vercel Pro plan price list
The free plan comes with many strict rules, while the paid version is billed per technical team member.

Clients who come to MONA for an online store or software often hold the misconception that putting a system on Vercel will run smoothly all year without costing a cent, until mid-month the site suddenly shows a blank error page. The order system is completely paralyzed, and the inbox holds an email from the provider saying the account has been suspended. Stuck.

According to the latest document on Vercel's usage limit policy, the Hobby plan, which costs nothing, is issued only for personal, non-commercial projects. Free comes with conditions. If you run a company system or a website with sales transactions, the provider locks the account immediately once it detects a violation.

Vercel's homepage announces that the free plan includes 100 GB of bandwidth a month, which misleads many engineering teams. The reality is that a function can run for 300 seconds at most. A static site that just shows text passes easily. When you need to calculate inventory or control the payment flow on a e-commerce website, the process is forced to stop by the platform with a timeout error.

We took over a system a client brought to us. Errors kept appearing, but their engineers could not find the root cause. When we opened admin access, we found that the system logs on this free plan are kept by Vercel for exactly one hour. By the time the on-call staff noticed the error and reported it, every technical trace had been wiped clean with no clue left. If you decide custom software to run long term, you have to buy the Pro plan at 20 dollars per person per month.

The Hobby plan, which costs nothing, exists only for student projects or testing internal ideas. Do not build your business foundation on a free service, because the cost of losing customers is a thousand times higher.

The pain of customers who cannot reach your website because of a cable cut

MONA bear stuck because the website loads too slowly
Unstable international connections make users wait too long, and orders are lost entirely.

Eight on a Saturday night, you spend ten million on an ad campaign, customers click the link and sit watching the loading circle spin, and by the third minute they give up, close the browser and buy somewhere else. Revenue drops, staff report errors, but engineering checks and the system still shows green.

This is the connection trap of using an overseas server. Clients who come to MONA for a project ecommerce website design, or software often complain that every evening users say the site is slow. When our internal system measured speed on 05/09/2026, the problem became clear. Latency from the VNPT network in Ho Chi Minh City to a domestic server is only 5 to 15 milliseconds, while to Singapore it stretches to 30 or 50 milliseconds. Submarine cables keep breaking, and data crawls back to Vietnam whenever there is an incident. You lose customers right away.

Worse than slow speed is local network congestion that freezes all business activity. On the provider's forum there is a thread asking for help about a routing error where Viettel's network blocks connections in Vietnam, and engineers on VOZ complain that any process running past 10 seconds gets cut off by Vercel on the spot. This hard limit stalls every large data calculation and every periodic report export the company runs.

When advising on custom software, we always tell clients that domestic infrastructure is the foundation that keeps money safe. Never put your revenue in the hands of a foreign platform that gets disrupted every few weeks by a cable cut. Customers are here, so the server should be here.

Technical traps that make a Vercel app suddenly stop running

MONA bear searching for deleted system error history
Incidents usually happen at night, but the cloud system keeps the error history for only one hour.

In the middle of an ad campaign spending millions a day, the landing page crashes and shows a white screen. You rush to open the system to find the cause, and the whole error history has already been erased. All traces are gone. We have untangled this for a dozen or so projects that put their source code on Vercel to save a few bucks at the start.

The first trap is right in the Hobby plan terms that IT people usually click past. This plan exists purely to run personal, non-commercial projects. You may run a tiny site with only a handful of customers, but as soon as the page has a buy button, Vercel can pull the plug on your system immediately without warning. Every transaction is cut off.

The second trap is debugging blind. We took over an e-commerce store running on the free plan that crashed at exactly two in the morning every night. The Hobby plan's Runtime Logs are kept by Vercel for exactly one hour, so by eight when your staff opened their computers, all the evidence of the error had vanished. Without logs, developers just guess instead of fixing the break at its root, and orders kept dropping for a whole week.

Pay-as-you-go billing is also a double-edged sword. When traffic spikes, the credit card gets charged so fast that shop owners panic and shut the site down to stop a thousand-dollar bill, while report exports running past ten seconds are cut off by Vercel immediately. You may not know what is vercel and move source code to the cloud yourself, then get your project locked, which happens every day. Starting custom software for internal use while ignoring these infrastructure rules makes the system a time bomb.

Never put your business core on a trial plan. Pay 20 USD per month for the Pro plan so Vercel keeps your system running stably, and set a hard Spend Limit in the dashboard to block the risk of costs ballooning at month end.

What is the alternative to Vercel in Vietnam for businesses

MONA bear receiving a VAT invoice for server service
Every infrastructure operating fee comes with a clear VAT invoice, fully solving the monthly bookkeeping problem.

Clients who come to MONA for an online store or software often face accountants shaking their heads and returning documents because they cannot book expenses paid by a personal international credit card, with no valid red invoice at all. Each month the company pays hundreds of dollars for hosting through an engineer's personal card, the money leaves but the books stay empty. This is a hassle for the person whose name is on the account. Especially when the team argues endlessly because the money paid for foreign software does not match any documents.

Paying in Vietnamese dong and getting a VAT invoice

Moving to a domestic server settles the bookkeeping problem for good, and your accountant gets a 10 percent VAT invoice every period. The MONA Cloud price list bills by the hour in detail, with each CPU core at 250 VND and the lowest-spec server costing less than 402 thousand VND a month. Every payment is in Vietnamese dong, which makes reconciliation very easy. When you stop a server you are still charged for disk, so we always tell clients to go to the dashboard and delete the service. Only deleting it stops the charges. We ourselves fixed a webhook key mismatch on 15/09 that caused top-ups to arrive without the wallet being credited. We fixed the AI wallet top-up flow on 17/09/2026, and since then the rule is that every key that handles incoming money must be checked with a real transaction before it is opened to clients.

A server located in Vietnam cuts latency to the minimum

Customer data stored in Vietnam stays secure inside the country and is never cut off suddenly the way serverless functions are. Based on the measurements published on monacloud.vn, tested from VNPT Ho Chi Minh City, a Vietnam server responds in just 5 to 15 milliseconds, while a connection from Singapore takes 30 to 50 milliseconds. Visitors do not have to wait. Very low latency keeps the app running smoothly, and warehouse staff can keep clicking without staring at a loading spinner. We have an internal system that measured machine creation speed on 05/09/2026, and creating a VPS took just 11 seconds. When advising on custom software, we always tell you to prefer domestic infrastructure if your system has to handle dense transactions.

Many people look up what Vercel is and then try to cram a large sales system into its free plan. An admin app that processes data in the background and needs complete tax documents must run on a Vietnamese virtual server. If your project is just a short information page, do not waste money on a dedicated server.

Check with your accounting team whether any expense from last month got stuck because staff had to pay for foreign servers in dollars with a personal card. Or whether your most recent ad run crashed the site and engineering could not find the cause because the system had automatically wiped its history. The trial stage is always smooth. Once traffic grows, the site spinning in circles and USD invoices that swell and cannot be booked are what directly erode your profit. If you need a server located in Vietnam, topped up from a VND wallet via VietQR with a valid 10% VAT red invoice, just tell your staff to have AI set it up in a free sandbox on MONA Cloud. We opened a direct channel through MCP, and AI needs only 11 seconds to create a server that is ready to run. Let the machine do the work.

How we optimized server speed for clients

MONA bear optimizing server connection speed
Domestic server infrastructure brings response times measured in milliseconds and is fully immune to submarine cable cuts.

Clients who come to MONA for an online store or software often run into connection errors at ten at night, while that month's server maintenance bill still gets charged on schedule. Many of you assume that blindly buying expensive cloud will make the site fast, but in reality most failures come from network configuration, because servers sitting abroad leave data stuck on submarine cables. You pay the monthly maintenance without missing a cent, but customers still stare at a spinning circle until their eyes hurt. You lose money and still get upset, because nobody can explain what that invoice was for.

That feeling is exactly like when you first tried Vercel: a small project runs smoothly at first, then bandwidth keeps choking as it grows. Many clients brought their whole project to us after suffering through long periods of slow networks. When we take over a system, we clear out the old patched-up code and move the entire processing flow to Proxmox infrastructure located right in Vietnam. According to measurements on our internal system on 05/09/2026, creating a brand new VPS takes exactly 11 seconds and setting up a PostgreSQL database takes 67 seconds. The most valuable part is latency. A real test from the VNPT network in Ho Chi Minh City shows a connection to a Vietnam server takes only 5 to 15ms, while going around through Singapore takes 30 to 50ms.

A difference of a few dozen milliseconds helps systems custom software run smoothly and wipes out the errors that kick customers out when orders pour in at once. Solid infrastructure is the foundation that lets you deploy with confidence AI-powered website management later, and spares your IT staff from staying up at night watching for crashes. Keep using foreign cloud if your company already has strong engineers on call every night. If you want to put your energy into selling, let us handle network optimization.

Flexible infrastructure that works for every industry

MONA bear checking retail chain data
Retail chains with dozens of branches also need solid server infrastructure to keep updating multi-channel inventory.

The accountant brings over the month-end credit card statement billed in dollars. The director can only shake his head because he does not understand where the money is going. You worry that this complicated cloud system is only for tech people, and that putting it into the business just makes things messy and bleeds costs for no reason.

We have untangled many businesses whose orders got stuck at peak hours, simply because they forced their process onto a trial plan whose functions are hard-capped at 300 seconds. Heavy jobs such as batch order collection, report export or system sync custom software break off midway, so customers wait a long time and then leave.

When we tested our internal system on 05/09/2026, we measured a server located in Vietnam at a latency of only 5–15ms from the VNPT network, far better than the 30–50ms of the Singapore server. Infrastructure inside the country keeps every operation smooth, customers check out without hiccups, and not one second of the site shows a maintenance error right when shoppers are crowding in.

A system with a database and long-running background jobs always needs a real server, paid openly in Vietnamese dong, with a clear VAT invoice so the accountant can do their work. Once an app is feeding the whole company, never put it on free hosting plans with limited processing time. Do not skimp on a few bucks.

Lessons from our automatic cloud top-up flow

MONA bear topping up a wallet with a VietQR code on a phone
The automatic payment flow through VietQR codes lets users top up instantly without going through many tedious steps.

In the middle of the night the site crashes because you hit the quota. You rush to top up and upgrade the system but the account still says there is not enough balance, and a complaint to a foreign provider has to wait until the next afternoon because of the time zone gap. Clients often ask what Vercel is and why using a foreign cloud is so tiring during an incident, and this is the root cause. The pressure at that moment is that the sales system is failing by the minute, and money is a matter for later.

We have been through all of this. On 17/09/2026, we successfully configured Claude Code, Gemini and Codex to call the top-up tool on their own and print the VietQR code straight into the chat window for the user to scan. The flow integrate online payment into your website through AI ran very smoothly then. Two days earlier the system had a serious bug: two internal products had mismatched webhook keys, so the bank reported a successful transfer but the app wallet did not record the balance.

We rolled up our sleeves and reviewed the whole process, forced the webhook to return the correct 200 status code and credited every single dong accurately. MONA's rule changed completely from that night. Every key that handles incoming money must be verified with a real-money transaction using a payment QR code before it is officially opened to clients. No exceptions for a site that is selling.

If you are not comfortable handling incidents in the middle of the night, do not use a foreign system with no direct Vietnamese-language support. Never hand your business over to an automated platform before you have personally topped up the first one thousand dong to watch how the money flows.

Frequently asked questions about Vercel and usage limits

MONA bear answering questions about system limits
Many business owners were surprised to find their company's app was breaking the trial plan rules.

Last week a client called us in the middle of the night because his online store suddenly showed a blank error page. When we opened the company's Vercel account, we were shocked to see dozens of projects crammed into one free Hobby plan. On the surface he saved a few dozen dollars of server rent each month, but once the platform runs a single scan, all the data can vanish without warning. He lost every order.

What is Vercel, in short?

To explain quickly what Vercel is, think of it as a server with the configuration already set up, where you just drop in the code and the website runs by itself. Everything goes live very fast. We often pair this platform with MONA's vibe coding toolkit to speed up project timelines, or use it as a hands-on example in the free Claude Code course from MONA so students can play with it.

Can Vercel Hobby be used commercially?

The Hobby plan clearly states it is for personal, non-commercial purposes only. If you build a small clothing store, add a payment gateway to close orders and run it on the free plan, you violate the terms directly. Once the platform detects a site that makes money, it permanently locks the domain. To run a business project, you must buy the Pro plan at 20 dollars a month. No exceptions.

Can Vercel be used in Vietnam, and why does Viettel often block it?

In late 2024, a Vietnamese engineer opened a thread titled “Routing loop issue with Viettel ISP” on the GitHub forum to ask the support team for help. Instead of resolving it properly, they told the user to run a ping command to check the network and then closed the discussion. This infrastructure still gets international IP ranges blocked from time to time, or interrupted when submarine cables are cut, so the website keeps spinning and customers leave the page right away.

Runtime limits and the story of automatic charges

The Hobby plan caps the maximum runtime of each task at exactly 300 seconds. Many developers have complained that any feature that loads for more than 10 seconds returns a 504 error. Some even cried because a sudden traffic spike on their page made the system automatically charge a few hundred dollars from their credit card, and they had to remove the project to cut their losses. Unlike when you deploy build a website with AI to run internal tests, choosing the wrong infrastructure for real operation costs you cash. You pay a lot for what you get.

Never use this international infrastructure to run a sales project unless you have an engineering team on watch day and night for error codes. Just rent a server inside the country, pay in Vietnamese dong, and get a clear red invoice. At night you can sleep soundly.

Ready to put your system on a stable server in Vietnam

The MONA bear team is ready with technical support
When your system runs for real customers, you will need Vietnamese engineers who pick up the phone as soon as there is an incident.

Picture the system crashing in the middle of the night while customers keep chasing their orders. You go to the Vercel forum to ask why the Viettel network cannot reach the site, and all you get back is a dry request for ping results, then the repo gets locked on 20/12/2024. The feeling of fumbling around alone on a foreign server is truly helpless.

When we take over and clean up a system, we have seen countless shop owners fail simply because they hated paying for their own infrastructure. The Vercel Hobby plan, with 100 GB of bandwidth and 100 deployments a day, looks like a bargain at first, but running a business on it breaks the rules, and if you go slightly over the limit they make you wait 30 days to reopen. When shop owners grit their teeth and move to the Pro plan at 20 USD a month per developer, the Visa card gets charged automatically, and at month end the accountant digs through everything and still cannot find a VAT invoice to justify it. The most painful part is during a traffic campaign, when a request that runs over ten seconds makes the server cut the connection and annoyed customers go to another shop.

Moving to a stable cloud server in Vietnam settles this for good. On the MONA Cloud system, the upkeep of one e-commerce websites standard machine is only about 550 VND per hour, which works out to less than 402 thousand VND a month. Prepaid wallet top-ups are quick through a VietQR code, with a proper 10% VAT invoice every month. Most important of all, the hotline 1900 636 648 always has a Vietnamese technician on duty. When something breaks, someone takes care of it.

Our honest advice is that Vercel is only suitable as a place to play with free interface experiments. For real work, don't. Once you are running a business that earns money, never leave your revenue to ownerless, self-managed server systems.

A manifesto for growing together

MONA is a software, digital transformation and AI transformation company, but above all, MONA is a B2B service company that benefits directly from this: THE MORE SUCCESSFUL VIETNAMESE BUSINESSES BECOME, THE MORE MONA BENEFITS, while a declining, slow market with weak technology is exactly what kills MONA's future business opportunities. So, more than anyone, MONA wants you to succeed, and MONA actually steps in to help you succeed.

And AI transformation is the key to that success for all of us.

A site crash during ad spend and the pain of dollar invoices

Watching the dollar bill jump every month while the site spins in circles right at the golden hour of your ad run, you must be feeling the pain. We understand you tried to cope by having engineering swipe a personal card and bring receipts back to the accountant to find a way to make them legitimate. Many business owners also tried upgrading to paid foreign plans, or splitting the app into pieces to get around the rules. But by the time the landing page crashed, the error history was already erased, engineering did not know where to start fixing, and the dollar receipts never become a red invoice. The server has to be in Vietnam. We built the MONA Cloud platform to provide virtual machines billed hourly from just 550 VND, topped up directly with VietQR, with a ten percent VAT invoice issued as well. If your app already has real customers and needs a solid system, just call 1900 636 648 directly.
