What is a gateway and how does it work?

Quick summary: Gateway is a common term in information technology and telecommunications, used in the process of moving data.

Gateway is a common term in information technology and telecommunications, used in the process of moving data. The gateway was created to solve the problem of connecting two different network devices. So what is a gateway, how many types are there, and how does it work? Let MONA Media walk you through gateways in detail below.

What is a gateway?

A gateway, also called a protocol converter, connects two networks that use different protocols (Example: IPX, TCP/IP, DECnet, SNA and so on).

Simply put, when one network wants to talk to another, the gateway handles the inbound and outbound traffic of both and makes the two protocols compatible, so the networks can communicate.

A gateway combines the features of a router (routing device) and a modem (modulator-demodulator) to solve the problem of connecting without limits to other devices. What sets a gateway apart from a router and a modem is that it communicates using different protocols. A gateway lets individuals or businesses simplify an internet connection for any device.

In addition, a gateway helps manage all data redirected within the network or from outside it. It also stores and secures information about internal paths in the host network and additional networks.

How does a gateway work?

How does a gateway work?

In practice, every network today can only communicate directly with the devices connected to it. A network that wants to talk to outside devices or networks therefore needs a gateway. The gateway was created to solve this problem.

A gateway is essentially a combination of a modem and a router. Gateways are installed at the edge of a network and manage all data from that network that is redirected internally or externally.

When two networks want to talk, the data is sent to the gateway along efficient transmission paths. Besides routing data, a gateway stores information about the internal paths of the host network and additional networks. Gateways basically make protocols compatible, acting as protocol converters on any layer of the OSI model.

What are the benefits of a gateway?

What a gateway offers

The basic benefits of a gateway are:

  • Connectivity: Thanks to gateways, different networks connect better, and a gateway also helps extend a network by linking many computers and other systems. So the same information can be reached from different kinds of computers.
  • Protection from unwanted users: To improve security, a gateway can authenticate users with the ID and password set on the network gateway. Unwanted users therefore cannot reach any information on the network. Only authorized users can access everything on the whole network.
  • Filtering: A gateway filters by checking every data packet before letting it through.
  • Domain control: A gateway can manage collision domains and broadcast domains as their numbers keep growing.
  • Protocol conversion: What makes a gateway special is that it can convert data packets as needed. So whenever the destination network has different requirements, the gateway can convert all data formats to match.

How many types of gateway are there?

Gateways come in many types, and each has its own features and tasks:

  • Web application firewalls: This type of gateway protects web applications by filtering and monitoring HTTP traffic between a website and Internet. This keeps web applications safe from attacks by malicious actors.
  • Cloud storage gateway (cloud storage): This gateway communicates and translates data storage requests between local client applications and the provider using API calls. This makes it easier for users to upload or download data in the cloud.
  • API, SOA gateway: This is a type of gateway often used to manage traffic into or out of an architecture, website, application or web service built on an XML platform.
  • Email security gateway: This type of gateway is used in email systems to stop spam, phishing emails and emails that break company policy from being sent.
  • VoIP trunk gateway: This gateway makes it easier for service devices such as landline phones and fax machines to connect to a voice-over-IP network. It lets a subscriber connect directly to the VoIP network without involving carriers.
  • IoT gateway: An IoT gateway connects controllers, sensors and smart devices to cloud storage. Before going to the cloud for storage, sensor data from devices in the IoT environment is processed and its protocol converted. IoT gateways also provide offline services and real-time control of connected devices.

What is the difference between a gateway and a router?

Gateway and router

In electronic telecommunications, the router is a concept often compared with the gateway. So what is the difference between a gateway and a router?

A router is a hardware device that analyzes data packets and forwards them to different networks. It supports dynamic routing and works at layers 3 and 4 of the OSI model. A router sets routes for networks and traffic based on the destination address. Routers are usually hosted only on dedicated hardware and add features such as wireless networking, server functions, NAT, DHCP and static routing.

A gateway, on the other hand, does not support dynamic routing and only works at layer 5 of the OSI model. It operates on the distinction between inside and outside the network. Unlike a router, a gateway is hosted on physical servers, dedicated applications or virtual applications, and adds protocol conversion and network access control.

How to check the default gateway

Mona Media presents the 2 simplest ways to check the default gateway:

  • Method 1: Using the ipconfig command in CMD: on the main Windows screen, choose Start -> Run or press Windows + R. When the Run box appears, type CMD and click OK. A command window opens; type ipconfig and press Enter. When the line labeled Default Gateway appears, you can check the address.
  • Method 2: Checking directly in Windows: first find the Wi-Fi icon at the right of the screen, right-click and choose Open Network & Internet settings. Then choose Ethernet -> Network and Sharing Center. The Ethernet Status window appears; click Details to see the parameters.

A gateway acts like a door connecting networks and plays an important role at the entrances to other network nodes.
