What is Domain Rating? Meaning and how to increase DR

The DR Domain Rating is one of the key metrics in SEO. But many SEOers ignore it or do not fully understand what it means. So what is Domain Rating, and how do you raise it most effectively? Learn about? Let's MONA Media explains the DR metric in the content below.
What is Domain Rating?
Domain Rating (DR for short) is a metric that rates the strength of a backlink compared with other websites on a scale of 100, as ranked by Ahrefs.
To calculate DR, consider the following factors:
- When a domain's DR is higher, more link juice will be passed to the domains it links to
- The source domain splits its ranking value evenly among the domains it links to. So a domain with DR 10 that links to 3 other domains has more influence than a domain with DR 80 that links to millions of others.
- After repeating this calculation, Ahrefs has a ranking for each domain. The final DR value is obtained by scaling the absolute values, calculated within the range 0-100.
What Domain Rating means
Domain Rating is not just a number on Ahrefs' scoring scale; it also helps a lot in SEO Onpage. So what does DR mean for an SEOer?
- A score for comparing website credibility with other websites in the same industry.
- It assesses website quality and shows how your site stands.
- It helps SEOs analyze and find competitor websites with higher DR, so you can compare your site against them and find better backlinks you have not yet built.
Some websites get very high traffic but revenue stays flat. Why? They don't understand the customer journey. In this video Huy shows how to read real data, so you can see how many steps customers go through before converting. Watch it now!
How domain rating is calculated
DR is fairly simple to calculate. Here is the formula you can apply:
- Collect the domains that have at least one Link Dofollow to the target website.
- Analyze and check the DR value of those linking domains.
- Check how many domains each of those websites links to.
- Calculate the raw DR score, then compare it on a scale of 0 to 100.
DR Domain Rating checker toolsr
The SEO community now has quite a few tools for checking DR. Besides Ahrefs, the tool most people use, here are 3 other tools you can look at:
- Domain Authority Checker (Moz)
- Authority Score Checker (SEMrush)
- Trust Flow Score (Majestic)
Each tool has its own interface and pricing. But most return DR as a number from 1 to 100.
To check this metric, just log in to one of the tools MONA listed above, enter the URL in the domain checker, and wait a few seconds for the result. Besides DR, you can also get other analysis data about the website, such as UR, score Domain Authority, number of keywords in the top, search volume, backlink profile, PA score, competitors in the same industry, monthly figures, traffic and more.
These tools give you a more detailed view of a website. From there you can analyze, research and decide how to improve your SEO.

Things to know about Domain Rating
As MONA shared above, Domain Rating is a SEO terms that shows a website's ranking strength. However, it is only an estimate based on Ahrefs' measurement, and a high DR does not guarantee a high ranking on Google.
Raising DR also takes many other factors, one of which is backlinks. But a website with a large number of backlinks will not necessarily reach the top either. Backlink quality matters more than quantity for improving your ranking in Google results.
Also, Domain Rating is often manipulated today. Experienced specialists and SEOers who have worked with domain rating for years know how to raise this metric unusually fast.
How to judge a good Domain Rating
Domain Rating is shown as a number on a scale of 100. Domains with a high Domain Rating are well-regarded and trusted websites. Most websites with high DR are large sites with many links pointing to them. But besides quantity, those links must also be good quality.
However, DR is only one part of SEO, so don't focus on it too much if you want keywords to rank at the top. Domain Rating is just a yardstick to help you find better links and improve your site's backlink profile.
To lift keyword rankings, focus on other factors too, so your website grows steadily. Here are some things worth knowing:
- Optimize internal links: Internal links help Google read and index your site more easily. They also give users a better experience and help raise conversion.
- Improve page load speed if your website loads slowly.
- Your website must be mobile-friendly.
- You should also build keywords and engaging content to grow your site's traffic as naturally as possible.
How to raise your DR domain rating and improve SEO rankings
Domain Rating is an important metric for evaluating a website. With it, SEOs can analyze and plan a website's development more easily. A website with a high DR also ranks better in SEO. So how do you raise Domain Rating effectively?
The first thing is to improve your backlink profile by removing bad backlinks. Pay special attention to backlinks from websites with a DR below 10. Links from such sites not only fail to help your website grow but can also cause harm later. You should also look for backlinks from high-DR, quality websites.
If you do the above, your website's DR Domain Rating will keep rising.

Q&A about the DR metric
1. Backlinks haven't been lost, so why did DR drop?
DR can drop even when you haven't lost backlinks. It may be because more competitors have appeared in your industry, so competition rises and DR falls.
2. Why is DR still low when a site has many backlinks?
Domain Rating depends not only on the number of backlinks but also on their quality. More links are better, but quality matters alongside quantity.
Another factor that affects DR just as much is how many links the linking site itself points out.
Example: Say your website is linked from a domain with DR 30, but that site links out to only 3 pages. Your site then gets more strength than from a DR 60 domain that links out to 300 others.
3. What factors does DR depend on?
Many factors help drive growth in Domain Rating. The most important are the points below:
- Site quality: the website must be well designed, with page speed optimized, and UX/UI that gives users a good experience.
- Optimized on-page content quality.
- The level of competition in the field or industry your website operates in.
- The search results for each topic the website targets.
- The total search results in the website's industry.
4. Why is DR much lower than UR on the same website?
DR and UR both measure strength through the links pointing to a website (backlinks). But Domain Rating works at the domain level: it looks at the number and quality of domains linking to the whole website. UR only rates a single URL.
