Domain Lifecycle: .vn and International Domains in 2026

Every domain has its own lifecycle, from registration to expiry. Some domains have just one lifecycle, while others go through several periods of existence and development. The lifecycle of a Vietnamese domain and an international domain is basically the same, with a few differences set by VNNIC and ICANN.

Vietnamese domain life cycle

It may seem that a domain registered once can be used forever. In fact each has its own lifecycle, and the lifecycle of a .vn domain is basically set out as follows:

• Lifecycle of a Vietnamese domain before 07/02/2022.

• Lifecycle of a Vietnamese domain after 07/02/2022.

Stages in the lifecycle of a Vietnamese domain

The lifecycle of a Vietnamese domain goes through 5 stages:

1. Free domain status means the domain has not been registered by any person, organization or business. You can register the domain for your business while it is in this status.
2. Registered domain status and owned by an individual, agency or organization, with a registration period of at least 1 year and at most 10 years.
3. Suspended status occurs 25 days after the domain expiry notice. The domain is suspended for 25 days, but the registrant's name is still kept.
4. Renewal/maintenance status this is the period when the domain is suspended and waiting for renewal. The registrant can pay the renewal fee to keep using the domain.
5. Revocation processing status occurs after the domain has been suspended. This stage runs automatically and can last up to 15 days. While in this status you cannot domain renewal. It becomes a free domain and anyone else can register it again from scratch.

Some notes on the lifecycle of a Vietnamese domain

• When a domain is not renewed or its maintenance fee is not paid, it enters revocation processing.
• After a domain moves to revocation processing, within 15 days VNNIC works with the registrar that manages the domain to carry out the administrative procedures confirming the revocation.
• When the administrative confirmation is complete, the domain returns to free status. This process happens automatically and at random within no more than 15 days from the start of revocation processing.

Once a domain has been revoked, it becomes available for others to register. For anyone who wants to keep their domain, paying the maintenance fee before expiry is very important to avoid this process. Note, however, that the specifics may change according to VNNIC's regulations and the point at which you go through this process.

The lifecycle of an international domain

International domain name is a domain registered with an international domain management organization ICANN, a domain that any individual or organization who wants to use one can own.

The lifecycle of an international domain includes these stages:

• Free domain status.
• Domain in registered status.
• Expired domain status: When a domain expires without being renewed, it is suspended right away.
• Suspended domain status: The domain owner can renew within 30 days of the expiry notice. During this time the owner can renew at the normal price, but cannot transfer the domain. After 30 days, the domain enters a renewal stage at a higher price, which lasts 35 days.
• Revoked / pending delete status: After 35 days in the high-price renewal stage (that is, 65 days after the expiry date), the domain is revoked. It can be newly registered after 5 days in pending delete status.

Stages in the lifecycle of an international .com domain

Available domain status

At this point the domain has not been registered by any other individual or organization. In this status you have the right to register it, and you must follow the domain's rules. Register a domain according to the following naming rules:

• A domain must not exceed 253 characters, including the .com extension.
• Characters in a domain must be letters a-z, digits 0-9 and the hyphen (-).
• The registration period is from 1 to 10 years.
• A domain can be held for up to 50 years, depending on the domain provider's policy.

Registered domain

After a domain is successfully registered, it starts to work. It then belongs to the individual or organization that registered it. At this stage the domain has some characteristics:

• Domain transfer: You can move to another domain provider during this stage. Note that you must wait until the domain is 60 days old.
• Domain renewal: The renewal period can be 1 to 10 years, depending on your needs.
• Forgetting or not renewing the domain: If you forget to renew the domain or no longer need it when the domain expires. Your domain will then automatically move to the “Expired“.

Expired domain

At this point your domain has moved to the “Expired” status, with these characteristics:

• You you cannot reach the domain in this status because your domain has expired.
• You cannot transfer the domain to another domain provider.
• For .EU, .WS, .AI and .DE domains: The renewal grace period is 4 days before the domain expires.
• .UK domains: The renewal grace period is 14 days after the domain expires.
• For .CN domains: The renewal grace period is 4 days after the domain expires.

Based on the experience of the MONA team says: the rules and grace periods in this stage may change depending on the policies of the domain management organizations and the rules of the specific domain provider. For some domains such as .EU, .WS, .AI, .DE, .UK and .CN, the rules and grace periods can be set specially and differ from other domains.

Redemption period status

In this status, all the information of the domain management has been deleted, you can no longer reach the domain, and it no longer works. The international domain organization ICANN sets this stage at about 30 days, after which all domain information is deleted. The domain is still not open for free registration, though.

To recover the domain, you can contact the registrar directly and ask to redeem it. The redemption cost is usually around $100, and you pay the redemption fee plus at least 1 year of renewal.

Pending deletion status

If you do not redeem the domain, it enters pending delete status, and you can no longer renew it in any form.

• The Pending Deletion status lasts 5 days, after which the domain is deleted completely.
• The Pending Deletion time is from 11 AM to 12 PM Pacific Time (that is, 1 AM to 4 AM Vietnam time) on the last day, when the domain is deleted completely.
• You can use the Date Calculator tool to work out the domain's expiry date and related events; it simplifies the calculation.

Available-again status – Released

At this point the domain returns to the first stage, “Available”, and goes back into the domain lifecycle so it can be registered again.

Some notes on the lifecycle of an international domain

Some points to note about the stages of an international domain lifecycle:

• Renewal decision: Deciding whether to renew a domain is up to the owner. Renewing on time is very important to keep ownership and avoid losing the domain.
• Risk of permanently losing the domain: If a domain is not renewed on time, there is a risk of losing it permanently once it has moved to the “Expired” status and is not recovered in time.
• Domain snipers: Domains with high traffic are often targets of domain-sniping bots. When a domain is released again and the owner does not renew in time, those bots are likely to register it again quickly.
