How to choose a domain name for your website, and avoid changing it later

A domain name is your brand's face on the internet. It not only helps customers find you on search engines, it also creates the first impression. A good domain that suits your business helps build a professional image and raises brand recognition. How do you choose an SEO-friendly domain for the best results? MONA Media will share experience on choosing a domain that helps build a successful brand. Read on.
How to choose a good, SEO-friendly domain for your website
Optional register a domain is the first and most important step in building a website. A good domain is easy to remember and search for, and it also helps search engine optimization (SEO). Here are some tips to help you pick a domain you like.
Short, easy-to-read, easy-to-remember domain
When choosing a domain, prioritize short, easy-to-read and easy-to-remember names made of familiar characters close to your brand. That helps customers find you easily and remember your brand longer. Examples include mona.media, hp.com, dell.com…. Domain the shorter, easier to read and easier to pronounce a domain is, the faster people remember it. Choosing a domain is not just picking a string of characters; it is also an advantage for your company's marketing strategy.
A domain that matches your brand and your field
Pick a good domain that matches your line of business or your company name, so customers recognize your brand and can tell what your company does. It sounds simple, but in practice it is not. Using your company name as the domain is a good choice. If you cannot find a name close to your company name, a good alternative is a domain related to the field your business works in.
A domain that cannot be confused
A distinctive domain is one that users will not mix up with an existing one. If the domain you choose is similar to another, you may run into problems when you run your marketing campaign and business operations. For example, customers may get confused when searching in their browsers, or your brand may be exploited. The domain should also be easy to read and easy to hear, so you can say your website address to someone over the phone.
A domain without numbers or hyphens
Many people add numbers or hyphens to make a domain more unique, or because their first choice is taken. To keep a domain memorable and avoid typos, avoid numbers, hyphens and repeated letters. Choose short, easy-to-pronounce words related to your brand instead.
Choose the extension based on your target customers
If your business targets customers in every country, extensions such as .net, .com and .org are the more convenient choice. If you want customers to see that the domain is Vietnamese, use .vn, .net.vn or .com.vn. If you work in education, choose .edu.vn.
A domain with SEO keywords
When choosing your domain, consider the keywords you want to rank for, or keywords tied to your field, products or services that customers search for a lot. A domain that contains a target keyword lets users see what your site offers, reflects the content on the site, and gives your site a better chance of ranking high in search engines.
Local domains
Choosing a domain by location is an important strategy for commercial websites. A local domain steers your website toward the right region and customer segment. If your target customers or readers come from a specific province or city in Vietnam, choose a Vietnamese domain without diacritics and include the place clearly. Avoid English or other foreign-language domains in this case. This strategy not only strengthens geographic awareness but also helps the company or individual sell products or services. For example, if you are in Ho Chi Minh City and run a food business, you could choose a domain such as:
- tenduongpho.saigon.vn
- nhahangquan1.hcm.vn
Register surrounding domains to protect your main domain
If you have the budget, buying several domain extensions at once is a smart move. Pay attention to key extensions such as “.com”, “.vn” and “.com.vn”, so others cannot register a similar or overlapping domain. For example, if your domain is “mona.com“, consider also registering variants such as “mona.vn“, “mona.com.vn“, and similar domains

Choose a top-level domain
How do you choose a domain that looks good and fits best? The extension you pick is an important decision and usually depends on your specific goals. A top-level domain generally carries more credibility than second- or third-level domains. A good, fitting domain not only adds to your site's credibility but also makes search engine optimization (SEO) easier. For example:
- Top-level domain: tuhocmmo.com
- Second-level domain: tuhocmmo.com.vn
- Third-level domain: tuhocmmo.hn.vn
Check a domain's history before registering
Check the registration history of a domain to find out whether it has been used before. A domain may be unused now but could have been active in the past. If it has been used, find out what field it served, to see whether it suits your website. Also check whether search engines like Google have penalized it. A brand-new, 100% unused domain is the safe choice, since it is unique and has no history.

What brand domains and SEO keyword domains look like

So should you choose an SEO keyword domain or a brand domain?
A domain is one of the key factors that directly shapes how a website grows, so the choice between a keyword domain and a brand domain deserves close attention. If your company wants to grow for the long term, choose a brand domain, because it is what makes people remember you. For an individual, a keyword domain makes it easier to reach customers. Above, we have shared 10 ways to choose a good domain for your website. Each approach has pros and cons. Choose according to your needs and growth goals to get the result you want.
Once you have chosen, check and reserve it right away with AI

When they land on a name they like, many people wait until the next morning to ask accounting to pay. By then, someone else bought it at midnight. One step late and it is gone. In our years in this work we have seen countless cases of people who chose a name but hesitated for a few hours, and ended up buying it back from a reseller at a high price. Reference prices we measured on 17 Sep 2026: a .vn domain is 756,000 VND including VAT, and a .com is 432,000 VND including VAT.
To solve this, we use a buy-first, register-later flow. Customers only enter an email and phone number to reserve a name, with no account needed. When you search for a name, the AI calls the function cloud_domain_search to check availability and quote a clear price in VND. If you decide to buy, a VietQR code is generated for the exact amount; money paid before you have an account sits safely in the reservation, and you get it with a single login. We have also built in the error code 422 spelling_unconfirmed so the AI makes you confirm the spelling before paying, since a misspelled domain cannot be refunded.
When we bought the domain monadomain.vn through the API on 17 Sep 2026, the purchase was accepted but the provisioning step returned a 502 error twice. We hit this error before any customer did. Our extra API requirements went straight to the MONA Host team, and since 18 Sep the live flow shows the error code along with a clear cause. The AI configures records through cloud_domain_dns_add, and after buying, the customer has to point a CNAME and wait for DNS to propagate before SSL can be issued. Please do not rush to request a certificate at this step. Forcing it early causes an error.

What a .vn domain needs

Many people buying a Vietnamese domain dread the paperwork: printing hard copies, signing, mailing them, and starting over if one word is wrong. Instead of sending customers back and forth, we restructured the registration flow so the AI pre-fills the legal declaration, which makes the whole process light. Simple as that.
Once you have chosen, search and reserve with the AI right away. You only need an email and phone number to receive a VietQR code; money paid before the account exists stays in the reservation, and one login gets you the domain. Reference prices we measured on 17 Sep 2026 include VAT and are fully transparent: the .vn and .com.vn domain costs 756,000 VND, the .id.vn domain is 86,400 VND, the .io.vn domain is 43,200 VND, and the .com domain is 432,000 VND. The split of work is clear. The AI fills in the declaration .vn, points DNS and issues SSL. You only check the spelling, pay, then complete eKYC or digital signing once. No more fumbling.
You still need to respect the state's firm rules: the platform does not currently register domains for people under 18, and the WHOIS data of the .vn domain is locked once bought and cannot be edited. Do not register it in an employee's name.
